THE PSYCHOLOGY OF MAGICK: Jung & His Wretched Subjects

This article was written by The Nephilim Rising’s Astrologer, Emily O’Keeffe.

My first love is Psychology. I was Psych major in college, but even before that, I have always had a fascination with why people do the things they do.

I’ve always been an observer, I love to people watch, so it was just logical that the “whys” would happen at some point. I first heard about Jung in Psych 101 but it was such a general overview that I didn’t really think much of it.

Then later I took a class called Jung and Contemporary Mythology.

That’s when I fell down the rabbit hole.

If you don’t happen to be familiar with Jung, I’m sure you are familiar with many of his concepts.

The Collective Unconscious is the big one.

I will try to give a very basic definition but really, I could write a whole article just on just this.

The Collective Unconscious is the part of the unconscious mind which is derived from ancestral memory and experience and is common to all humankind. It is distinct from the individual unconscious that carries our own memories and experiences.

It is like a small pool (individual) that gets its water from the flow from a larger pool (collective), in other words our own individual unconscious is a smaller more individual version of the collective. It is all the same type of content, content that speaks in symbols.

These symbols of the Collective Unconscious are called Archetypes.

Our individual unconscious also contains these Archetypes, as well as our own personal symbols and we often put our own personal filter on these Archetypes or identify with a certain aspect of these Archetypes more than others based on our personal experiences of them.

Archetypes are another subject I could write a whole article on so I will try to give a brief explanation of them as well. They are universal symbols that every culture has. Each culture tends to have it’s own interpretation of these symbols but they do exist in every culture.
Jung was an analytical psychiatrist.

He was a student and friend of Freud until around 1912, when they had a philosophical falling out. A lot of it had to do with Jung’s study of what historian Otto Neugebauer referred to as the ‘wretched subjects’. They are the study of the liminal and numinous subjects of humanity. Subjects like religion, magic, the spiritual, and the esoteric.

Jung is the only one of the big name psychological philosophers that I know of, who acknowledged the validity of these subjects to the human experience.

Whether one believes in any of these subjects personally, one cannot deny that they are in fact a part of the human experience. If one is really honest with themselves, everyone on the planet has experienced something that they just can not explain.

Lots of people, most people actually, shrug these things off as figment of our imagination or childish or crazy.

For a scientist to acknowledge something of the numinous it was the kiss of death to any validity at all, because one can’t ‘prove it’. This is admittedly somewhat of an oversimplification but for the purposes of brevity, Jung was of the belief that it doesn’t necessarily need to be proven empirically or explained to be true. Once he started speaking of these things, he was labeled a mystic so a lot his work was discounted.

Even some of the most hardcore Jungians won’t really talk about his study of such subjects. It’s kind of an open secret that they tolerate but just don’t talk about.

Jung studied Gnosticism, alchemy, the tarot, and astrology, just to name a few.

In fact, astrology was so integral to his analytical process that he did natal charts for all his clients, also his colleagues. In Jung’s own statement, he began studying astrology while he was still working with Freud ‘in order to find a clue to the core of psychological truth’.

He used natal horoscopes to better understand the unconscious dynamics of his patients ‘in cases of difficult psychological diagnosis’.

Further, he recommended that any person training as a psychotherapist should learn astrology, and that astrology’s value is ‘obvious enough to the psychologist, since astrology represents the sum of all psychological knowledge of antiquity’.

Jung says that ‘the sun, moon, and planets were the exponents, so to speak, of certain psychological or psychical constituents of the human character; and this is why astrology can give more or less valid information about character…’

He says in a very lengthy letter to the French astrologer Barbault, ‘there are many instances of striking analogies between astrological constellations and psychological events… Astrology like the collective unconscious with which psychology is concerned, consists of symbolic configurations: the ‘planets’ are the gods, symbols of the powers of the unconscious…’

His biggest critique of astrologers is that they were too literal and not symbolic enough. Also involved in his theory was the quality of time.

He says, ‘The qualities of the different months of the year, in other words the zodiac, are really the projections of our unconscious knowledge of time and the qualities of time. It is as if there were profound knowledge in our unconscious, knowledge based upon unconscious experiences, that certain things originating at certain times of the year have such and such qualities’.
It has been my experience and the experience of many others that have studied this in depth, that the natal chart acts as map of you or if you prefer your soul. It’s your personality, your psychological complexes, and if you believe in past lives, which I do, where you’ve been and where you’re supposed to go in this life.

It’s sometimes disturbingly accurate, and even tells us things about ourselves that we would rather not admit, in other words our shadow sides.

It’s a map for our individuation.

For those that are not familiar with that term individuation, it is the integration of the conscious and the unconscious material of our psyches, two parts becoming one whole.

It is a lifelong process and cyclical.

We keep coming back to the same lessons until we learn them and integrate those parts of ourselves.

Or to put into alchemical terms turning lead into gold; or in the terms of the tarot its going from The Fool to The World.

It’s all the same premise just in different languages so to speak, but overall it is the language of symbols, the language of Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious.

SERPENTINE WISDOM: Kundalini Awakening & Rising

***NOTE: This photo series is by Monika Ottehenning and I do not own the rights. This imagery fits beautifully.***

“When you succeed in awakening the Kundalini, so that it starts to move out of its mere potentiality, you necessarily start a world which is totally different from our world. It is the world of eternity.”

Carl Jung

A Kundalini Awakening happens to about 24% of the population and most of the time it is written off as a physical condition, instead of a spiritual condition that is manifesting in the physical.

The word Kundalini (Sanskrit) means ‘coiled like a snake’ which seems appropriate since it is the life force energy that sits at the base of the spine, bound, and awaits for the awakening.

Kundalini, being feminine itself, is often associated with Shakti, the feminine life force, or sexual energy.

An awakening can happen intentionally through Kundalini Yoga, or other various Yoga poses, but it can also be unintentional, say a back injury, a fall or extreme emotional distress. Some experts say that child birth, meditative practices, and celibacy may also contribute to the awakening. In my case it was a mixture of celibacy and yoga practices; when I had my spiritual awakening, I knew I needed to focus on myself and that meant I had to cut off sexual encounters; the best decision I have ever made.

Before my awakening I would not have shown such restraint.

Celibacy is a personal choice, and one that not many understand. I consider myself to be an extremely sexual, and sensual being and am often told it oozes from my Soul, but I don’t need to be actively engaging in sexual encounters with no depth to be considered sexual; just one of the many lessons my awakening has shown me.

In the past, I didn’t know my worth and I would freely give my sexual energy away.

When your Kundalini energy decides to awaken, it is a sudden pulsating surge that moves up the spine like a serpent and as it moves it blasts open your chakras, one by one.

Most people stay at one level of consciousness for long periods of time, what the Kundalini does is it rips open your third eye, and brings to light any emotions, or wounds you are hiding in the depths of your chakras.

Here is an excerpt from a great book on the topic called Psychotherapy and Spirit:

“As each chakra opens, new levels of consciousness are revealed. Since the consciousness of most people is fairly restricted, the opening of the chakras is accompanied by consciousness expansion and purification of the limitations or impurities that correspond to each chakra.” -Brant Cortright, Ph.D.

I can attest that it is probably the most painful experience one can have, because you are being attacked, for lack of a better word, on a spiritual, physical and emotional level but it is yourself who is the attacker.

Often times Spiritual folk want to make this awakening out to be a beautiful experience, and for some it might be, but the Serpent is notorious for it’s powerful and unforgiving transformative powers.

How do you know if you are experiencing an awakening?

You will usually feel a tingly, pressure from your tailbone up your spine and through the crown chakra; I am known to have blockages in between my shoulder blades, that is where my emotionally chaotic energy is stored when I have not meditated in a while.

Some of the physical symptoms of this awakening are: sensations of heat, tremors, involuntary laughing or crying, talking in tongues, nausea, diarrhea or constipation, rigidity or limpness, animal-like movements and sounds.

The Kundalini energy is a yogi philosophic form of Shatki. If you are not familiar with the term Shatki, it is the female principle of Divine energy, especially when personified as the supreme deity, Durga.

Since the Kundalini energy is feminine, even though both sexes carry it, it makes sense to refer to Kundalini as a form of Shatki.

A side effect that I have heard many women experiencing during this specific awakening is they become prone to yeast infections. The vagina, Sacral and Root Chakras are considered the Feminine Shatki centers in our body; when that is out of whack, it triggers all types of physical manifestations, even though it is a spiritual issue.

So, please listen to your body and treat it accordingly.

I am going to give some tips that have helped me get through this process, one that I still have good days and bad days with.

The number one thing that has helped me is my piece of Jet. There is a property within this specific crystal that when it is worn between the breasts (on a male or female) it takes the Kundalini energy and allows it to be released through the crown chakra. This can cause a slight light headed feeling, a flood of memories, or even tired feeling, but you must release the energy if you do not have time to sit and meditate to get control of it.

Secondly, meditation is paramount. While in your meditative state you must find your snake, in most cases you will see a field of snakes, but you must single yours out; allow the snake to come to you then you must take control of her, and allow her to coil her energy around your left hand. Let her know that you are in control, but pay respect to this Divine feminine energy while doing so.

Also, yoga or some kind of stretching is essential to the Kundalini process. As a beginner yogi I realize that Yoga is hard for many, but there are some poses that everyone can do to some degree that will benefit the release of built up energy in your spine. Such as, child’s pose, downward dog, and Kundalini Yoga itself (which is fairly simple as it focuses on stretch more so than strength, and resistance).

The next tip I suggest is to find a creative outlet, for me it’s my writing, and divination. I fell in love hard with divining because I had to focus my thoughts on something, anything, to get my mind off the pain.

Find something that challenges your mind so that you are not continuously checking back in on the pain.

The last tip I suggest is eating a healthy diet, and stay hydrated! I am all for water and tea; I keep it simple. Try to be aware of the processed foods you are eating, stay away from foods that are too fatty, try to eat as natural, and organic as you can.

Try adding in spices, too because your taste buds will change during this awakening.

Stay away from harmful substances during your awakening such as hard drugs and alcohol in large amounts.

Alcohol intake can increase the pain and makes you dehydrated, which makes the spinal pain worse. When the body is dehydrated the discs that connect your vertebrae become less flexible, and “dry”.

I am a Cannabis Advocate, btw.

I know from personal experience that this can truly be a devastating awakening, but the reward is like nothing else in this world.

My advice is to take care of self, listen to self, love self, honor self and the rest will work itself out.

You must be patient, do not rush the process.

Please do not go out of your way bending, and contorting to awaken this energy, either; if it is meant to happen to you, it will.

If you wake her up and she is not ready to be awakened, prepare for a wrath like no other.

The Kundalini rising is just another way that the Serpent gives us knowledge.

Embrace it.

PLUTO RETROGRADE: The Summer of our Discontent

Pluto went retrograde on April 25th. It will be retrograde until the 4th of October.

Welcome to the Summer of our Discontent.

Not gonna lie, since the big Saturn Pluto conjunction in January, it has felt a bit like all Hell has broken loose.

The world in is chaos right now.

If you are at all sensitive to energy, you’ve been feeling this energy intensely.

Now that Pluto has gone retrograde, it has turned its energy inward on us.

In other words, Pluto has gone in to the Underworld of our unconscious to do the things he does best, shadow work.

Flushing out the ghosts and demons in our psyche.

They hide there.

We think they are gone because out of sight out of mind, but really they are sleeping or biding their time and getting stronger in the dark.

Pluto finds them out, because he knows how they are and how they hide and he flushes them out. He gives you the chance to see them and transform them into power and self-knowledge. But so often they overwhelm us. We may get one or two before they take us down, but the ones we miss go back into their hiding places to wait again.

We all have our own personal demons, but we also share some universal ones.

One of those is Doubt.

Doubt is a fucking bastard.

You can’t ever kill it.

However, you can make it smaller and less likely to flow over in to all areas of your life.

One of my favorite stories about doubt is Orpheus and Eurydice.

It’s beautiful and sad, a classic tragic love story. Orpheus, the son of Apollo, was a musician. No human or beast could resist the beautiful music he played. He fell in love with Eurydice, a beautiful woman of charm and grace.

They marry and are very happily in love. Shortly after their marriage, Eurydice steps on a snake, is bitten, and dies instantly. Orpheus is inconsolable. He sings his grief so beautifully, that he is able move every being in this world and the next. His father Apollo urges him to speak to Hades and Persephone. He gives Orpheus protection so he can journey to the Underworld.

Once there, he speaks with Hades and Persephone in the court of the Underworld. He sings his song for them and brings Persephone to tears, and surprisingly Hades as well. They allow Eurydice to leave the Underworld with Orpheus.

But nothing worth having comes without a price.

Orpheus must lead and Eurydice must follow, and as long as they are both in the Underworld Orpheus must not turn back to look at her. If he does, she must stay in the Underworld and be lost to him forever.

If he is patient and trusts that she is following, he will have her by his side in the world again. He thinks no problem, he has faith in the Gods and he is a patient man. They start their way out of the Underworld. As they walked, Orpheus could not hear her footsteps behind him.

Doubt started to overtake him.

Would the Gods really would do what they said they would do?

They made it all the way to the edge of the Underworld and the doubt finally over took Orpheus.

He turned to see Eurydice being pulled back into the Underworld, lost to him forever.

Doubt is Caution’s toxic shadow side, which is why we can never really get rid of it.

However, if you let it get out of check, it spreads like an infection. It’s good to be cautious, but you still have to have some hope and some trust in yourself and others.

Fear is another one of those universal demons.

It’s related to Doubt and Caution, but it’s much worse.

It’s a shapeshifter.

It looks different to everyone and it knows exactly where it needs to hit us to completely paralyze us. One of Fear’s biggest weapons, is the lies it tells us. It uses lies that it hears from Doubt to manipulate and control us. It’s a toxic little mix down there in the dark.

One of my favorite episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is called Fear Itself. It’s Halloween and everyone is going to a haunted house that ends in a party at a frat house. While decorating they decide to use a sigil from some random book because it looks cool and they paint it on the floor. Someone cuts themselves and blood drips on the sigil and of course starts the summoning of something. Its happens. Turns out they have begun to summon Gachnar the Fear Demon. First, he takes over the house and brings to life all the Halloween decorations and locking in all the guests and closing walls behind them. He turns the house into a maze and keeps yelling “Release me!!!” The more fear that everyone shows the stronger and louder he gets. He gets into everyone’s head and starts manifesting their greatest fears. Some of those fears are psychological, like abandonment and loneliness and being invisible to people that you love. They end up at the room where the sigil is and figure out what’s going on. When the Gachnar finally does manifest, he turns out to be about 6 inches tall and then when everyone sees its actual size it gets squished.

Pluto right now is flushing these demons and a bunch of ghosts attached to them, out in your psyche. They come at you like a swarm sometimes and it feels bigger than it really is because it disorients you.

It’s scary and sometimes its actual panic and those are very real feelings but are they true?

If you could freeze the swarm for a moment and see it for what it really is, is it really what you thought it was?

Can you put those ghosts to rest and let them go?

The more you put to rest, the less will come out in the swarm the next time.

Pretty soon it’s just little bouts of fear and doubt from time to time, just to clean out the cobwebs. The smaller it is the easier it is to handle. This whole process is not a good time. Like at all.

It’s necessary, but all transformations are painful and often there is a pretty heavy price. What you gain however, is personal growth and becoming more whole. These are the themes of Pluto retrograde. This Plutonian energy is happening to us personally and globally.

And, we are probably all going to be forced to sit with it, distraction free because of the global pandemic, until Pluto goes direct on October 4th.

This is shadow work.

The more we acknowledge and accept our shadow sides, the more they become conscious and we can integrate them into the whole of our personality where it becomes power and knowledge that we can better control.

LESSONS IN MAGICK: Archetypes to Get You Through a Dark Night

Dark Night 5

***NOTE: This piece is written by guest Author Chris Davis of Individualogist***

With all the ups and downs in life, it’s almost impossible to say that we’ll always be able to avoid bad luck. As such, there will always be some nights where things won’t go our way. No matter how hard we try to make things our way, the universe just doesn’t seem to cooperate.

Given such, it is normal for us to seek help. Instead of trying to solve things on our own, it is best to explore this option as it may provide an indispensable resource to us. By looking for the possible archetypes to help us, it becomes easier to get through these dark moments of our life.

Based on the 12 Jungian archetypes, we’ll point out the specific ones that could be of use. As these archetypes are present in each of us, we’ll be able to perfectly identify which ones suit this problem the best. Thus, in this article, we’ll be outlining some of the archetypes that can help you get through a dark night!

Dark Night 6

The Caregiver

Perhaps the most significant of the archetypes mentioned, the Caregiver should always be your first choice. As they are ready to help at will, their indispensable value will allow you to feel that much-needed warmth and care.

With that, they are always ready whenever you need them because, for the Caregiver, this is their true purpose in life. Altruistic to their very core, the caregiver seeks nothing in return but perhaps a little appreciation. Thus, when they are there for you, make sure to show your appreciation. That alone is more than enough to make them smile and cherish the moment!

Dark Night 7

The Innocent

As bearers of light, the Innocent are good at giving people hope when there’s nothing else to believe in. Of all the archetypes, they are the most optimistic as they believe in an ultimate good – the utopia where all of us are happy and comfortable.

With that, a dark night’s effect on us will often be effectively quelled by the Innocent. Given their powers of optimism, they will help you regain your lost confidence. On top of that, they will also repel your fear, as you will feel that you can achieve almost anything.

Dark Night 8

The Hero

Of all the archetypes, the hero is the one who’s destined to face a lot of challenges. As their character becomes refined with these challenges, the more they become capable of helping those around them. Armed sheer willpower, the hero can become a symbol of protection and peace.

With their ability to save others from harm, the Hero archetype can also be a perfect companion for the night. Given their strength and courage, the troubles that you’re facing are something that they’re used to. As such, they can help you by showing exactly how to solve them.

people-2597995_1920

The Jester

Perhaps the funniest archetype, the Jester will make jokes and create humor for everyone. With their wittiness, they can creatively think about how to interpret a situation. As such, in the old times, most of them are hired to bring joy and laughter to kings and commoners alike.

In dealing with a dark night, the Jester excels at diverting your attention. While it may not seem much of a solution, it can somehow prevent you from worrying too much. As they are able to bring out that unique sense of self, the Jester provides excellent support.

Dark Night 10

The Magician

As an archetype, the Magician is known to have the ability to access the transcendental. Compared to other archetypes, they are the closest to the divine source of energy, making it easier for them to harness their power.

With that, they certainly have the ability to turn the bleakest situations into brightest ones. Simply put, their powers can not only help you through a dark night but even get rid of it, just like how Gandalf was the bearer of light in LOTR.

black-dress-1444415_1920

The Ruler

Pursuing power above everything else, the Ruler sees themselves as ultimate governors of their own state. Seeking to change the lives of others while maintaining their own legacy, the Ruler pursues power in order to wield it for such purpose.

With that, the Ruler most certainly has the ability to change things. Capable of protecting you from your external enemies, this archetype can mobilize his/her power in order to help you get through that dark night. Like a king or an emperor, the limits of what they can provide is almost boundless.

books-2596809_1920

The Sage

Getting through a dark night is not only about care or protection. More importantly, a dark night must be understood and comprehended in order for us to gain a better perspective on it. With that, nothing beats the Sage in providing you that much-needed knowledge.

As the classic saying goes, knowledge is power. With the help of the sage, you will gain that power which you can use to counter the situation. More importantly, this subtle understanding of the dark night will also allow you to prevent it from happening more often.

Given the 7 archetypes that were pointed out in this article, we hope to have contributed some valuable points to you. By paying attention to the archetype of those around you, you’ll be able to assess better if they’re fit to be with on a dark night.

As unforeseeable problems and conflicts may arise during these times, it is essential to know how each of these archetypes can help you get through things.

A Holiday Shopping Guide for the Modern Mystic and Witch, Part 3 (2019)

Pine

Since 2017 I have written Holiday Shopping Guides; these generally consist of Witch Owned Shops that I personally support.

I also would like to share a little of the Season’s Magick by possibly gifting these Shops with views, traffic and patronage.

As mentioned in previous Holiday posts, I know many people think Capitalism sucks—it does indeed fucking suck.

But, if we must Shop, or if we want to Shop, we should have access to sustainable, homemade, Witch-Owned, Heart Centered businesses to give our money to; that’s why I create these blogs.

Also, I must start picking the pieces of my life back up and find my groove again.

Here are this year’s Shops:

Oil

Anointing Oil of Belial

The first Shop is Uprising Earth on Etsy. I know the Shop Owner personally, and he is simply brilliant. Uprising Earth offers high quality, sustainable Ritual Incense, Oils, and Tools; I own one of everything this Shop has to offer, so I know what I am talking about. I personally love the Belial products, and Belial loves them, too; I have noticed an increase in potency and energy since pairing my Magick with these offerings.

Love Spell

Love Spell Soy Wax Melts

The second Shop is a new small business that was created in June of this year, and is run by my best friend, in fact. Roxy Rose Candle Co. offers high quality, paraben free, Soy candles, and wax melts to suit all your Magickal (and mundane) needs! I am a sucker for wax melts; I also can’t rave enough about her Roxy Rose Candle, and her 7-Day Candles! Be on the lookout too because Roxy Rose will be undergoing a bit of a face-lift as the business expands and narrows in on a market; offering goods not seen anywhere else.

FW

Florida Water

The third Shop is Three Cats and a Broom on Etsy, admittedly I discovered this Shop through Aidan Wachter. Sooo, simply put, Jen and her products are out of this world! Like, seriously. I initially ordered Florida Water at Aidan’s suggestion, and was gifted some of her MAGICKAL Herbal Salve. Have you ever seen ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’? If you have, you know the Father in the story uses Windex to heal *everything*–it’s hysterical. Well, this Salve is my Windex; I literally use it for everything. I have since bought a large jar of the Salve, Prosperity Water, Rue Water and, of course, more Florida Water. The thought, intent and talent that goes into these products are undeniable.

Disc

Orgonite Disc for EMF Protection

The fourth Shop is 432Oneness on Etsy. For a long time, I wasn’t drawn to Orgonite; it felt New age-y to me, and I was like “well if you want the crystal’s properties why not just get the crystal?!” But then I was gifted a Chakra Orgonite Pyramid, and holy shit. As someone who is extremely sensitive to energy, of all kinds, I immediately felt it’s power, and I felt a grounded. I’m so sensitive my phone makes me sick if I hold it for longer than 10 minutes at a time, but then I found the Orgonite Discs offered by this Shop, and my phone’s energy is now contained. I have bought 3 discs myself; my Mom has bought 2, and I shared this Shop with a group I run on Fb—just about everyone there went and bought one. They really, really work. Plus, they also some beautiful Orgonite jewelry.

EE

Protection from the Evil Eye Spell Candle

The fifth Shop came to my attention because I was gifted a Spell candle; just having the candle in my room made my entire apartment smell like it, and it wasn’t even lit! In fact, I didn’t light it for a long time because I was so in love! The Shop is Shadow Wick Creations on Etsy. These are real deal, absolutely fucking glorious Ritual candles; they have inscriptions, gemstones, and all kinds of Magick INSIDE OF THEM. I want them all, tbh.

ZE

Zambian Elestial Amethyst Lariat Necklace

The sixth and final Shop on my list is Creatrix Craft, another Etsy Shop. This one is actually Owned by a local friend of mine! Be on the lookout because she has some AMAZING Rune and Elestial Amethyst Necklaces to add to her Shop this week, and I have been swooning over them. This Shop offers wreaths, jewelry, and resin wearable art! She is also an otherworldly Artist, and you should for sure check out her IG to get more updates.

As I say every year, it doesn’t matter what you call this Holiday Season, or if you celebrate at all; let this guide be a reference for your Shopping needs all year round, if nothing else.

Blessed Are The Witches.

LESSONS IN MAGICK: INITIATIONS & WITCH BLOOD

Light

“We take spiritual initiation when we become conscious of the Divine within us, and thereby contact the Divine without us.”

Dion Fortune

This topic has been on my mind for a super long time, but I was taking a hiatus from writing and I wasn’t sure how to appropriately discuss this.

Here goes nothing.

I do not want to come off pretentious, elitist, or as a gatekeeper; I want to smash those ideologies, in fact.

I DO want to speak some personal truths and share observations in hopes that we as a community can grow, discussions can start, and we can change some of our negative patterns (both action and thought).

So, I might say things in here that are going to offend you, or annoy you, and make you roll your eyes, depending on your journey and path—I implore you to please read my points, and this piece in its entirety before forming an opinion.

There’s this large group within the greater Witch community who wants to see the Craft become accepted, mainstream (as far as not being considered completely taboo and Satanic) and open.

Then there is another group who wants the Craft to stay underground, to remain Occult (hidden) and let the muggles think what they want about us.

There is a final group forming of people who fall somewhere in between.

I have always been the latter.

The fear a lot of folks have with the Craft becoming mainstream is that it will lose its Mysticism, it will lose its Saredness, it will lose all that it means to be a Witch; to walk among the unseen and exist in Liminal Spaces.

What these folks fail to realize is that no matter how mainstream we become, there WILL ALWAYS be secrets to the Craft, there will always be things that can only be understood if they are truly experienced.

Light 4

The Witch must experience their Craft subjectively and, on their terms, in their time.

The Craft is a consciousness of its own, dare I say Spirit—far beyond an Egregore at this point.

The Craft will weed out those who are not worthy of all it has to teach, if they prove their Will is not true.

That is not for any person to judge; that is for the Craft, the Spirits, and the Ancestors to judge.

We are not gatekeepers, and I appreciate some of the sentiment behind this; the Craft is Sacred to me, too.

But it is not our job to be Keepers of this Gate.

The Craft keeps and tends to its own Gate.

Light 3

We each hold keys that we earned to access the Spirit World; my experience will be vastly different from yours, as will all the newer Witches coming up. We must make space for them, and allow them to earn their keys, too.

With all of this said, I want to discuss two specific aspects of gatekeeping that have become huge pet peeves of mine.

Myth: You must be initiated to be a Witch.
Fact: No, the fuck you do not.

The other day I was reading a thread of comments and it was kinda heated, and as I read one person was being ganged up on, so of course I clicked to read more and see what all the fuss was about.

The topic doesn’t matter, but what really bothered me was that people (more than 10) were hounding this person:

“Are you initiated? What titles do you hold? What Coven do you belong to? None? That’s what I thought.”

“You are not a real Witch if you have not been initiated, therefore your opinion doesn’t matter.”

And so on, and so on.

I was dumbfounded.

When did this become who we are?

I am not initiated by any group or person: THE GODS INITIATED ME.

Covens, Temples, Sects and Organizations have their place and for so many people they are a cornerstone of their practice.

But, for a lot of Witches, Solitary Practice is the only way, and, of course, there are a plethora of reasons as to why this might be.

Maybe they can’t practice in the open; maybe they live in a highly religious area; maybe they don’t play well with others; maybe they just prefer to Practice alone.

I think we should all read the works of those who came before us, listen when our Elders speak (that DOES NOT MEAN blindly follow, it just means listen as a form of respect) and accept Mentors if they cross our path or the opportunity presents itself and feels right.

However, I do not think initiation is the end goal, or at least, it doesn’t have to be.

Personally, your titles don’t mean shit to me or my Gods; we only care if your heart and your Will are true, and that you are living your authentic truth.

I am proud of every single friend of mine who has been initiated and holds titles, and props to building some amazing communities but please for the love of all that is holy and unholy, stop telling people that they must be initiated to be a Witch.

It simply isn’t true.

Light 2
Myth: Witch Blood makes you more powerful.
Fact: No. Just no.

When titles and initiations don’t make someone feel special enough, they must pull the Witch Blood card, and it makes me fucking cringe.

C R I N G E

If you don’t know what Witch Blood is, it means just what you think: a Hereditary Witch, or someone who was born and raised in the Craft or a specific Tradition.

I come from a line of Witches, Eastern Stars & Masons, and was raised by a Pagan Mother and Aunts in the Granny Tradition. My other Grandparents taught me Slavic Traditions.

None of that makes me any better than anyone else.

None of it.

We all have access to the same Power Source.

Read that again, let it burn, let it sink in, let it burn some more and accept it.

Your titles, secret books, pacts and oral traditions do not divide off a part of the Universal Source of Magick.

WE ALL HAVE ACCESS BECAUSE WE ARE ALL THE SOURCE.

lIGHT 7

After all, we are what we come from.

I certainly believe that some folks are predisposed to excel in certain areas of the Craft, and there are *soooo* many factors that play a role in that.

I equally believe that we are all Magickal beings trying to remember who we are in a world that is forcing us into cages and prisons of definitions and divisions.

The Witch and Pagan communities are supposed to be the one place where the weirdos, the outcasts, the shunned, the misfits are welcome and are free to be whomever they want to be.

Let’s not take that from them because the Egos of a few have poisoned minds.

Be the cure.

Be the balm that combats the poison.

Be the voice that raises other voices.

Blessed Are The Witches.

LESSONS IN MAGICK: Dark Night of the Soul

Dark night

“When you’re lost in those woods, it sometimes takes you a while to realize that you are lost. For the longest time, you can convince yourself that you’ve just wandered off the path, that you’ll find your way back to the trail head any moment now. Then night falls again and again, and you still have no idea where you are, and it’s time to admit that you have bewildered yourself so far off the path that you don’t even know from which direction the sun rises anymore.”

Elizabeth Gilbert

I haven’t written a blog since May, and even now as thoughts run through my mind, and ideas are filling up the memo pad in my phone, I find I simply can’t get the words out.

I don’t want to sit here, and as Hemingway said, bleed.

But, bleed I must.

Naively I had reached a point in my path where I was comfortable, not just in my personal life, but my Magickal, too.

The Universe doesn’t like comfort.

We don’t learn, evolve, grow, change inside comfort.

Now, before you say anything, obviously comfort as an emotion or supportive act is necessary in life.

However, comfort in the form of stagnation and failure to thrive is something else entirely.

I was the latter.

I was stuck and didn’t want to admit it.

For months I remained this way, allowing life to just pummel and victimize me until I had nothing left, until nothing was left except my shell.

The shell of who I used to be.

Of what my life used to be.

I had to grieve what was lost, I had to mourn who was lost, I had to feel all the pain that comes from massive, chaotic CHANGE.

Dark night 2

I slipped quietly into a depression, a pit of darkness to protect myself from what was happening around me; a way to keep my trauma at bay.

Trading one monster for another.

The entire time I was in the abyss, mourning the loss of……so fucking much, I found myself comforted by two quotes:

“All the Gods, all the Heavens, all the Hells are within you.”- Joseph Campbell

And,

“Wherever you go, there you are.” -Jon Kabat-Zinn

The first quote has been a “go to” of mine for many, many years now, and it takes on new meaning as the seasons of my life change.

This time, it returned me to my Hindu roots, and forced me back into daily practice and Puja.

I am both a Luciferian Witch and Shaivite Hindu, and I don’t care if that doesn’t make sense to you.

Campbell’s quote is the epitome of both Luciferianism and Hinduism.

The second quote, well that one is a bit more complex and required deep Shadow Work.

I am a master at escapism.

I don’t always do it, obviously, as I know how unhealthy it is, but *it is* something I do.

My Psychiatrist says that it’s my trauma response, and I can see that—a defense mechanism, but it’s detrimental to my health, my growth and my energy.

dark night 3

“The only way out is through” -Robert Frost

You can’t escape shit because when you come back, it will all still be right where you left it.

Not only will your problems be there waiting, but you will be there waiting.

At the end of the day, who do you have to sit with?

Who do you have to be okay with?

Who do you have to be on good terms with?

You.

dark night 4

You must sit with yourself.

You must be okay with yourself.

You must be on good terms with yourself.

This world creates enough war and conflict, the last thing we need to do is take that on and internalize it as some normal part of the human experience.

Yes, to a certain degree internal war and conflict are necessary; it’s part of the complexity of duality and Shadow.

But the immeasurable scale which we see war and conflict within the collective, and within ourselves is taking its toll on humanity.

It’s taking it’s toll on what it means to be human.

The key to being human is to live a life that is authentically true to who you are.

No other life is worth living or dying for; no other life will do.

To thine own Self be true.

My Favorite Witch Shops!

IMG_20191128_200913_860

I tried posting this on the page, but none of the links worked! It’s useless with broken links; stupid Fb policy.

So, I’m finding a loophole and posting on the blog.

I know this can be super annoying but I want to plug these Shops as a signal boost, so to speak.

I also know I am missing some, but tried to get in as many as I could think off the top of my head. 🖤

Many of us are Small Business Owners on top of being Writers/Bloggers/Public Figures.

In short, we have bills to pay.

I’d like to take this opportunity for all of you to plug your own Shops and/or your favorite Shops that are Witch friendly/owned as well!

Note: The Shops that my readership shouted out are at the bottom of this blog.

I’ve been really busy lately, and will get back to posting new content soon.

RANTINGS OF A MAD WITCH: Gatekeepers Be Gone!

GK1I urge anyone reading this to read the piece in its entirety before commenting or passing judgment.

I write this knowing full well the backlash that I will face, but at this point it’s go hard or go home, and what I am about to say is going to be hard for many to swallow.

The inspiration for this blog is this delightful gatekeeping bullshit meme that has been making the rounds:

FB_IMG_1554898997334

I want to make a few points and cause a few waves.

I am the first person to admit that humor is a key to life, and the Craft.

We must be able to laugh at ourselves, otherwise, the world will laugh at our expense.

Does that make sense?

The more you learn to have a thick skin and laugh at your own mistakes and the fuckery of life, the more you will be able to handle the world’s criticism.

And, trust me, the world always something to say.

Especially when it comes to someone else’s opinion or way of life.

Ah, the fucking irony.

I don’t think the above meme is funny though, I think it only further divides us and makes our community look completely uninviting.

It was for me—uninviting, I mean.

The community DID NOT accept me, and I was forced to create my own space.

Covens can be intimidating to Witches that are inherently Solitary; not everyone wants to be part of a Coven, or group.

So, the division this meme creates is issue number one.

Again, I am in favor of making fun of ourselves but this is gatekeeping.

You can have that.

GK3

The second thing is that this meme doesn’t consider accessibility.

This issue came up when the whole Sephora Witch Kit shit show went down, and people were up in arms.

Not everyone has access to buying things on the internet.

Maybe they don’t have a bank account yet, or they live with parents/family and can’t have packages sent to their house because their mail is opened (illegal or not, shit happens).

Then there are the people who are hearing the collective call to wake up, but they don’t quite know what that means yet, what it looks like, or how it will manifest.

A Sage bundle at Whole Foods, a crystal at TJ MAXX, or a tapestry at Pier 1 might help them on their journey—might trigger something in their memory.

The Witch IS the tool, I know that, many of you know that, but that knowing comes with time and practice.

Heck, even after all my years of practice, I still like using tools; ambiance, and focus and all.

Overharvesting of herbs, and ethical sourcing of minerals is a concern, and a valid one; not only the effects it has on Earth, but HOW the crystals are mined.

You would be surprised to hear that many of the big chain stores do ethically source their products; other’s do not.

You must research anything you buy, that’s your responsibility as a consumer regardless if we are talking Witch tools, or food you feed your family.

Obviously, in an ideal world we would be able to trust all sellers, but that simply isn’t the case.

Do your research.

GK2

The next point is something that so many Magickians are missing.

The use of herbs/botanicals, gemstones, Sacred Geometry and the like are all forms of Low Magick—not everyone aspires to be a High Magickian, not everyone is about ceremonial Magick; some are about dirt and bone, blood and earth.

Some are all of these and more.

Magick, and the Craft—how we experience them and how we practice is so vast, so unique that it almost cannot be quantified or individualized.

We all have our own experiences, our own reality and we all found our way to this path some way, somehow.

I think the further we go into the Abyss, and the longer we walk our path, we forget how we started.

We forget where we started and how we stumbled.

I was raised with my Mother teaching me the Old Ways to wash out the Catholicism my Father was attempting to teach me.

But it wasn’t until I was 12 and watched The Craft that I willingly approached my Mom with real interest, and at that point was gifted my first Tarot Deck, and my whole world changed.

As they say, the rest is history.

Not everyone has supportive parents, and with the boom Witchcraft is experiencing in Hollywood, you can expect a lot of young Witches to start waking up.

Also, the collective is breeding rebels.

That’s another post entirely though.

These baby Witches could benefit from having tools accessible in big chain stores.

GK4

Another point, someone commented on this meme saying that “having the girls who bullied, tormented and threatened to burn them alive in high school now call themselves Witches is a slap in the face”.

That is a valid point, and a valid wound.

High School fucking sucks.

It has sucked for everyone since the beginning of time.

And, yes, it is super irritating to see the people who taunted you for being authentic back then, claim to be a Witch now.

I get it.

Maybe we should approach with a bit of compassion though, instead of pain.

Maybe they grew as a person and they really are a Witch.

Maybe they are using the aesthetic as if it’s a trend.

That’s not for you to judge nor is it your weight to carry and it’s only a slap in the face if you give that hand power.

Witchcraft, and Spirituality in general have become trends, they are commodities for sale; they have been for decades now.

Read it again, and let it fucking burn because it DOES BURN.

It fucking sucks to see our Craft become watered down and commercialized to make it more palatable for the masses.

But, on the flip side, it’s empowering to see it become mainstream and hopefully, slowly, breakthrough the lies and stigmas told about us.

I see a new wave of Witches waking up, and I embrace them with open arms.

We all must start somewhere, and who cares where that starting point is?

When did we become so rigid about who we allow in our ranks?

Last time I checked Witchcraft is a personal practice.

And, an individual’s personal practice is not open to public interpretation, or prosecution.

Live and let live.

And for those who want to proclaim that their path is Sacred, so is mine.

I have put blood, sweat and tears into my Craft and it’s my lifeline; I don’t think it is something that is free for the taking, and that’s the beauty of the Craft.

Yes, people may find it buying Sage at Whole Foods, but the Craft itself, the Magick and egregore that Witchcraft carries, will weed out the real over the fake, you needn’t worry.

There will always be parts of the Craft that will remain hidden, and known only to those who truly walk the path of the Old Ways.

We cannot bring down this patriarchal system, these misogynistic religions unless we are unified, and we cannot be unified if we are distracted gossiping and judging each other and where we buy our tools.

We’re better than this.

Blessed Are the Witches.

QUESTIONS FROM THE CAULDRON: I F*cking Hate My Roommate

Serenity 1

Q: “I’m looking for advice to be able to deal with living with someone I do not like. He hasn’t done anything to me, but since I first met him my gut has been saying, “no, nope, get him the fuck away from me.” Unfortunately, it is not my choice who rents the other room in the basement. Is there a way that I can ground myself so I stop feeling tensed up and angry every time I see him?”

A: I have to say out of all the questions I received for this new column, this one hit my heart the hardest.

As someone who works from home, has agoraphobia and is a Cancer Sun I am a homebody to the fucking core; my home is my safe zone.

Witches, Empaths and Mystics *need* a Sacred space where they can seek solace.

This Sacred space should be our homes (even if it’s just a small corner Altar, or whatever ‘Sacred’ looks like to you and your Practice).

It’s extremely violating when our homes no longer offer us comfort.

We are left feeling vulnerable, open to attack, unsafe, un-grounded, chaotic, and cornered; each of these can be dangerous on their own, combined? They’re a recipe for disaster.

In Psychology our home is said to represent our psyche, so not only are you feeling an assault on your body (your gut/intuition are screaming “run, run, run”) but you’re facing an assault on your mind.

I think this situation, and any situation that looks similar (ie. Living with someone you dislike and being unable to move because…life) should be handled in steps…

In layers.

I am going to give a few options, you may choose to do all of them, or you may choose whichever one(s) resonate with your being.

First thing’s first, PROTECT AND CLEANSE THAT HOUSE!

This can be done in totally inconspicuous ways, that your (presuming) mundane roommates will not pick up on.

I love Sigil Magick and tend to do it two ways: I either make my own or use ones that are directly associated with the Spirits I work with regularly.

I don’t think that imploring Spirits we do not regularly work with for protection Magick is as effective; unless we have called upon specific land Spirit’s and/or Fae, but even then, I think sticking with what/who we know is best for this. The choice is yours though.

You can draw Sigils on walls using Florida Water, or certain Essential Oils (high alcohol content dries fastest, usually leaves no residue, and will not stain walls, but spot test first).

Do this in common areas where you and he share the space or put Sigils in his pathway. I would suggest symbols that promote calm energy while also representing power and domination are best.

Laura Tempest Zakroff has great material on creating our own Sigils, check it out here.

This isn’t just about grounding your energy, this is about re-claiming your space.

You can anoint a pillar candle, or a tealight and have it lit in a common area of the home; set it with intentions for your safety, for him to move (if that’s what you want) or just for peace in the home.

Serenity 2

Plants are an excellent way to promote peaceful vibes and bring the Earth element inside; helping to filter and ground the energy. Aloe Vera, Snake Plants, Pothos or Ivy are great options to add ambiance, and nature in our homes.

Prisms, or Witch Balls are also good to have around because they absorb negative energy (yours or his).

The next thing you want to do is protect YOUR energy.

Do not engage with him, if you can help it. When you do have to engage, keep it short, and be firm with your words (no matter the topic of discussion) but don’t let your anger takeover.

Shield yourself by using the command ‘Redimio’ (Ree-DIME-ee-O) which means “encircle me” and technique below–

Take a few deep breaths, focus on your Solar Plexus Chakra (bellybutton area) and imagine it opening and fire coming out, the fire goes down your body, beneath your feet, then comes back up over your head to meet at the navel area; once connected project the fire outward so you are encircled. This allows any negative intentions, evil eyes and just bad energy to burn and/or transmute before it hits your Aura.

Putting a bowl of salt under your bed will help ground your energy and cleanse your Aura while you sleep; change it every 3-4 days, add filtered or distilled water to amplify effect. If you have pets, you may use Tupperware with a lid (only use it for this purpose)—it isn’t as potent but will work.

Serenity 3

Wear or sleep with crystals that promote grounding/protection: Black Tourmaline (Transmutes negativity), Jet (Returns to sender), Smoky Quartz (Protects), Black Kyanite (High Vibrations to help rise above), Fire Agate (Fiery, shields you from enemies, and is grounding to the Earth), Clear Quartz (Endless Uses) and Labradorite (One of the most protective minerals in the kingdom).

Crystals that are good to help you not feel angry would be: Rainbow Moonstone (Yin Energy), Rose Quartz (Love), Lepidolite (Calming), Amethyst (Peaceful) and Fluorite (Clarity). Having Selenite around couldn’t hurt, either.

Iron and/or Pewter are great grounding materials if you are not into crystals.

Create a candle that represents yourself, I would suggest black, and every time you light it set the intention that your energy is grounded and rooted in your body, and the Earth; that you are present, you are powerful, you are strong, and you will not submit. You could also do a white candle to purify, or cleanse yourself and a red candle for vitality, and Pranic strength (life-force energy).

Remember, we can be both docile and defiant at the same time.

You can carve the candle, dress it with herbs, or keep it simple and use intention only; this doesn’t have to be pretty or perfect (neither exist in Witchcraft).

Cleansing your space and your body with Herbal Smoke Baths on a regular basis will help tremendously, as will Spiritual Showers/Baths.

A good and easy Spiritual Bath could be Epsom Salts, Coarse Sea Salt, Basil, Lemon (don’t use if you just shaved though), a few drops of Florida Water, Lavender and Calendula flowers. This is not a bath for hygiene, this is a bath where you soak and then get out—don’t rinse. You want the ingredients to do their work; when you do take a shower the following day (or whenever you feel necessary) I would suggest using African Black Soap; great for your skin and even better for Spiritual Protection/Grounding/Cleansing.

Good Herbs for Smoke Baths: Cedar, Mugwort, White Sage and Palo Santo.

You could also use resins such as Dragon’s Blood, Frankincense or Amber.

Meditation is something that I firmly believe helps, but I also think it’s a piece of advice that is given so often that people just scoff and roll their eyes. I mean, who the fuck wants to meditate in a toxic environment? But, if you can find the time, and peace, meditate.

Continue to listen to your body, and your intuition and reclaim your power; that alone will ground you and make you an unmovable force.

Blessings.
