REVIEW: The Power of Hex: Spells, Incantations and Rituals

It has been a long time since I sat down to write.

There is an odd comfort, like a warm embrace from a past lover, laced with a foreign feeling of no longer knowing who they are as intimately as you once did. The passion? Oh, the fierce passion is still there though.

My fire, my torch, my words are all still here, right where I set them down.

I have been forced into silence, hibernation, reflection.

Many of us have.

Admittedly, on my part, some of it is pure escapism.

Some of it is the sheer surrealism of our current reality.

This year, oy, this year! 2020 has seriously been a year for the record books.

Between everything that has been happening on the world stage; political, social, and economical and with how that has affected each of us individually

Everything that has happened to each of us individually in our personal lives/worlds (I do not know a single person having a “great” year),

we are burnt tf out.

It is like the collective is holding their breath, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

As an individual with CPTSD, this is such a familiar space and feeling for me; not that it makes it any better or easier for myself, or the rest of the world.

We are held up in our homes, and even though we may be understanding, it does not change how we may feel.

Like many of my readership I did not have to make many drastic life changes when the pandemic started because, well, introvert for life!

I was, however, infected with CoViD in March (as was my Mother) and have since been through the ringer regarding my health.

Currently, I have Lyme disease and a broken foot and toe from an accident at home.

The message from the universe has been clear—slow down, work smarter not harder, make your work work for you, and most importantly, turn to Witchcraft and your Spiritual practices NOW more than EVER.

With all that said, here is the reason I am sitting down to write today:

I figured it is the perfect time to introduce a new feature to my blog: book reviews.

For transparency, some of the books on the roster to be reviewed have been because I was approached by Publicists.

I *do not get paid* to promote books, nor do I personally get anything out of it besides a copy of a book here or there.

The opinions expressed are my own.

If you have any books that you would like to be featured, please send me a message.

One of the main reasons that people reach out to me and seek advice is to ask for book recommendations.

I love to read, and I have been diving back into study since the Universe wants me to rest.

So, this is a happy medium, for me. I am still a Creative, after all, and create I must.

Today’s book is ‘The Power of Hex: Spells, Incantations and Rituals’ by Shawn Engel

You can find her on IG here

You can find her Publisher here

You can purchase her book here

If you know my work, you know that I am not against Hexing, or any kinds of Baneful Magick.

I believe it should be done ethically (I know, this can be debated as being subjective but, I digress..)

I also know, you’re probably thinking, “what the fuck, Jac? You’re literally hexing someone. How can that be ethical?”

Well, my reply would be, we have all met “hex happy” Witches who think that every little thing requires some jinx, cross, curse, or hex and I am just like…

So, before I get into my review of content let me say that aesthetically, this book is otherworldly! It is hardcover, easy to read, with beautiful illustrations and text throughout.

I admit at first, I thought this book was going to be a hot mess; not because of Shawn personally, whom I have been following on IG for a while, but because of the topic.

How could this topic be approached from a non-colonial perspective, as so many Witchcraft topics often are laced with undertones of Patriarchy, Capitalism, Misogyny and White Supremacy? How could ALL forms of this Magick (hexing) be covered, or attempt to be covered? How could this Author ARM WITCHES with knowledge and practical methods without giving *too much*?

Yes, there is such a thing as too much, and that line must be crossed by the individual Practitioner through their practice, not through a book. The journey into the Void is the most personal journey we take as Occult Practitioners.

However, this book can, and will, aid you in knowing what to do when that leap into the Void happens and/or you are faced with adversity.

This is a book that should be in all Witches’ libraries

Shawn has covered every single base in these 128 pages.

She goes over history, from many traditions.

She covers ETHICAL HEXING; when, how, why.

She talks about HEXING AS ACTIVISM: fuck yes.

This book is rich with information, spells, and it is one of those that you can grab, and because it is written like a Grimoire, you can just open to the page you want, and your spell is right there.

I do not want to give away too much because, duh, I want to support Authors and I want you to go buy this!

But all of the boxes have been checked in this book.

I have read it three times through so that my review could be honest, and I mean *really honest* even if vague.

‘To Hex or Not?’

“Whether a hex is necessary is something that you will feel in your gut, but there should always be a cooling off period before you perform the hex. Taking an example from everyday life to illustrate this, consider some of the gun laws in the USA: a seven-day waiting period is imposed between the time you buy the gun and when you actually own it. This is intended to curb the potential for crimes of passion. Hexing calls for a similar self-imposed waiting period. I know it may seem dramatic to compare hexing to gun ownership, but I can’t stress enough how powerful the act of focused intention can be when it is backed up by rage. So, if you’re a lover scorned who was just cheated on by her ex, take a break before you hex.

To make issue as clear as possible: when you are deciding whether or not to hex, consider the environment in which a hex may be appropriate. The approach should help you distinguish between actual oppression and merely something bad that has happened to you. It will take some dedication and forethought, but this approach should help clear away any confusion around whether the subject of your hex deserves to be locked away or is just a human being who acted unfavorably.

When deciding to hex, it can be helpful to ask yourself some basic questions. Did this person hurt you or others? And, if so, did they do so with malicious intent? Did this person continuously harm you or others? And, if so, did they do so with malicious intent? The key here is to define intention and willingness to change, and then you should be able to decide if it is worth hexing that person.”

Within the pages of this book, Shawn empowers her readers to safely hex, and to use this taboo form of Magick as both defensive and offensive Magick which is an imperative lesson.

This is the perfect book for personal and collective change in these tumultuous times.

Magick is activism.

Hexing is activism.

Witchcraft is activism.

I’m here for it.

Go support a fellow Witch and buy this book.

You will not be disappointed.

Blessed Are The Witches.

LESSONS IN MAGICK: Cleansing and Cord Cutting

“You have to find that place that brings out the human in you. The soul in you. The love in you.”

r.m drake

In my recent article for WITCH I discussed how important self-care is to any practitioner of Magick, and/or energy worker; I think it’s because we get so caught up in our work that we often get lost in the mix of things, and forget to take care of “home” which in turn can have monumental, if not negative effects on us—mind, body and Soul.

I left out of the article one of the most important aspects of self-care which is: cleansing and cord cutting.

Now, I am not discussing cords or hooks that have be placed in our aura by another person with intention (Magick attack, Vamp, and/or Hex, etc.—though some of these methods will work in those cases).

I am focusing on the day to day debris we pick up just from going about our daily lives, and practicing Magick and energy work.

Admittedly this essay was partially inspired by Aidan Wachter’s video where he discusses his own simple, yet effective means of cord cutting; describing the energy as “luminous fibers” it really resonated and reminded me how important it is to remove negative energy *daily*.

I have discussed some of these forthcoming methods in my previous blogs about Protection and Grounding; apologies now if anything sounds repetitive but this is important stuff!

As always, my rule of thumb when it comes to Magick is keep it simple; cleansing and cord cutting are no different.

What do I mean when I say cleansing and cord cutting?

Well, I mean just that—cleansing our auric field, chakras, physical and Spiritual bodies of psychic debris that is not serving our Higher Self.

The cords are not usually malice in nature, and are formed without intention but for the Magickally inclined it can really hinder our work, focus and life force (power).

Especially because most of us are Empaths and/or Clairsentients.

I say the cords are not usually malice in nature because I want to reinforce the idea that Magickal attacks are not common—they are not unheard of but they are not common because it takes a lot of energy out of the Practitioner.

Not to mention that with experience comes wisdom and as we grow with Magick we learn there are ways to affect (dare I say harm) someone other than going all out for a hex, curse, crossing or jinx.

To be crystal clear, I am *not above* doing any of those things, and have no shame admitting that I hex and heal equally.

As I believe all Witches should.

Now that all the disclaimers and explanations are out of the way, let’s get to it.

Before putting these methods into practice be sure to set intentions on what you want to accomplish.

For example, “I cut away and remove all negative energy and intentions that are no longer serving me and my Higher Self; I remove all blockages, and unhealthy thought patterns. I am grounded, and protected; I am strong, and I am fierce.”

I have learned that by setting intentions, and ending with affirmations it helps me feel more focused and empowered; as with everything you may tweak this, and all suggestions given by myself to your liking, and situation.

Another thing, I am all about ambiance when it comes to ritual but you do not have to set up a Sacred Space for any of the methods I am giving to work; the point of them is that they are meant to be quick, and simple so that they can be accomplished daily by the average person who, like me, runs around like a chicken with their head cut off trying to “get shit done”.

Is it just me or does the to-do list once started never stop growing?

I like to set up my space with ambient music, or nature sounds; rain sounds are perfect because they not only have a calming but cleansing effect on us—the same as if we were walking outside in the rain, or next to a moving stream.

I also like to have a candle or two lit, maybe an incense burning, or essential oils in my diffuser.

Remember, this is all about self-care and that requires pampering yourself; so give yourself the permission to do that. Please.

Crystal Cleansing: When I am talking about cord cutting my go to crystal is Obsidian, particularly an Obsidian blade. Not only is this crystal (volcanic glass) associated with our Root Chakra, which automatically grounds and protects, because it is a glass formation it is perfect for slicing through cords, and attachments. This is one of the crystals I suggest to people after a break-up as well.

To cut cords using an Obsidian Blade (or any blade for that matter) I like to stand in Mountain Pose (feet hip width apart, arms at your side, knees locked and strong—body relaxed) because this pose is all about stability, and standing in your power.

I set my intentions, and starting at my Crown Chakra on the right side I glide the blade around my body—about an inch or so away from my skin, working all the way down to my feet, and back up the left side of my body.

Don’t forget to lift your feet and cleanse the soles, and don’t forget the palms of your hands, and your back (people always forget their back)!

Other good crystals for cleansing and cord cutting are Selenite, Black Tourmaline, Quartz Crystals (including but not limited to Smoky Quartz, Amethyst, and Citrine), Kyanite, Fluorite, Calcite, and Garnet.

Herbal Smoke Baths: This method was mentioned in my WITCH article but I can’t stress this enough.

What I have grown to love about plants is not just that they have their own personality, and Spirit’s but they all seem to have the ability to harm, or hurt—I understand and relate to this aspect of duality the most.

Even the most benign plant ally, if taken in the wrong dose can hurt us; goes back to the adage, everything in moderation.

Luckily for us, smoke baths do not require ingestion.

I like to use combination herbs, and for that I use my cast iron mini caldron; White Sage, Red Rose petals, Lavender, Red Sandalwood and Solomon Seal Root are currently being burned for calming, cleansing, and Spirit Conjure.

You may use a traditional Smudge Stick, or Spirit Stick, light it, and set it inside an abalone shell (adding an element of water to the cleansing) and doing meditation (active or still) while allowing the smoke to cleanse your aura.

There are plenty of ways to make this method your own—let the plant do the work, and you guide its energy.

Spiritual Baths and/or Showers: This is super important and super easy. When people think of Spiritual Baths they think of Vodou, and/or Hoodoo, because both traditions are heavily influenced by the power of water and have essentially conjured (pun totally intended) some of the best washes for the Modern Witch to use!

Florida Water Soap, for example, is perfect before, or after ritual to help cleanse you of any leftover debris, or residual energy. One of the good things about the homemade soap market being so vast now is that you can pretty much find a soap infused with any herb, oil, crystal and intention (most being vegan and organic, too).

One of my methods for cleansing and cord cutting is simple and done by adding salt to my shower or bath; Epsom salts or Pink Himalayan salt, preferably.

Another method is to pour Moon Water, or Rose Water over my head with the intent to cleanse my Chakras of negativity starting at the Crown, washing off my body and down the drain.

Afterwards, I cleanse my shower with Florida Water, or another batch or Moon Water.

A mixture of equal parts Hydrogen Peroxide and Water with 20 drops of Peppermint oil is another great effective cleaner because it adds the properties of Peppermint; mint in the home is protective.

Other associations include: cleansing, consecration, dreams, happiness, healing, love, money, passion, prosperity, psychic development, purification, release, renewal, rest, and sleep.

My home smells like a candy cane all the time because of this.

Spring Cleaning ALL YEAR ROUND: I can hear it now, “what did she just say?!”

I know, I know, nobody likes Spring cleaning but it’s part of life.

It should be part of our Magick, too.

It seems though, that when cleansing or clearing negative energy people often forget to deep clean their home; I don’t mean just a smudging, I mean *cleaning* your home.

I take down, clean, move, and re-assemble my altars every other month, though recently it has become monthly.

I also cleanse doorways, and windowsills with Florida Water or the Peppermint mixture mentioned above as part of my regular cleaning routine.

Spraying Moon Water, or Florida Water in corners will help disperse any stagnant energy; Florida Water on its own is a master cleaner, great for floors, cabinets, countertops, tiles, and bathtubs. Plus, it smells AMAZING.

Our homes are an extension of ourselves, and we should be mindful that they are kept in the best working condition; just as we take care of our body, and what we allow inside—we, too should be aware of what we allow into our homes.

We must take care of our Temples.

These simple but effective methods should be part of any Modern Mystic’s daily regime.

We are not only energy workers, we are energy sources, and we need to be cognizant of the energy we put out and take in.

No one is suggesting that we must be all love and light, but we should free ourselves of toxic psychic debris so that we can be the best version of ourselves;

So, we can be the best Magickian we can be.

Tips for the Modern Witch, Part Two

“You are one thing only. You are a Divine Being. An all-powerful Creator. You are a Deity in jeans and a t-shirt, and within you dwells the infinite wisdom of the ages and the sacred creative force of All that is, will be and ever was.”

Anthon St. Maarten

I am a person who likes to observe, and through my observations I have found that people want to know how to incorporate Magick into their everyday life; how can they make Ancient techniques practical in this modern world?

The texts out there are great as far as information goes but how do you APPLY all of that? How do you bring real Magick into your life?

It’s rather simple, really.

If I were not an insanely (literally, insane) creative person, I don’t think I would have come up with some of the tips/ideas that I have; not all of them are original ideas, they have been tweaked but the inspiration will be sourced and linked.

Magick is complicated but I think we overcomplicate it when it comes to practice, and application.

The first tip is kind of silly, I admit it but it works.

NAIL POLISH: I know, I know, you are thinking what in the fuck does this have to do with Magick? Well, this tip is two-fold. First, color therapy is real; not only are specific colors associated with our Chakras and Auras, colors themselves are associated with our brains. Psychologically speaking there is a connection between thoughts, stimulation and decision making and the colors around us. There is also a connection to color and energy; color is energy. Here  is a link that goes further into color and the brain.

Choose a color associated with a Chakra, or goal. Example: Purple and gold would be great colors for abundance, success, strength, connecting with Angels and prophecy. Purple is associated with the Third Eye and gold is associated with your Sacral and Solar Plexus Chakras.

The second part of this is, you can wear a color associated with a specific Magickal working. Say you have done a truth Spell; paint your nails blue beforehand (blue associated with the Throat Chakra and speaking truth). When you are writing your spell, and mixing your herbs/dressing your candle, you are infusing everything you touch with the truth energy. All because you painted your nails blue.

I know it sounds absolutely ridiculous but it really works. You are then connected to the Spell while the polish is on. Another, perhaps better example: say you want to bring love, lust and passion back into your relationship, or in your life; follow all of the steps listed but with a fiery red nail polish color instead of blue.

The general rule is, whatever colors correspond with Candle Magick (see below) would be the same for nail polish Magick. It works! Seriously.

White: Spiritual Blessings, Purity, Healing, Peace, Attracting Love

Pink: Attraction, Romance, Clean Living, Reconciliation

Red: Love, Affection, Sexual Passion (Sacral Chakra), Body Vigor (Chi, Life Force, Pranic energy, etc) Luck and Energy

Orange: Changing Plans, Opening the Way, New Roads, Prophetic Dreams

Yellow: Devotion, Prayer, Rewards, Happiness

Green: Money, Gambling Luck, Business Success, Good Harvest, Steady Employment

Blue: Peace, Harmony, Marital Fidelity, Joy, Healing, Truth

Purple: Mastery, Power, Ambition, Success, Control

Brown: Court Cases, Mediations, Neutrality, The Natural World and Animals

This is an excerpt from a past blog of mine on the Simplicity of Magick. Click here to read more.

The idea of nail polish Magick leads me to my next tip, and while I am a huge advocate for using herbs in as many hygiene and household products as we can, this is focusing on lip products.

HERBAL INFUSED LIP PRODUCTS: I recently bought a lightly tinted, super glossy and smooth Alkanet/Mint Lip Balm.

Alkanet is primarily used for dye, hence it being used for the tint, but it has properties like all herbs! In Hoodoo traditions, Alkanet is used in games of chance, to bring good fortune in matters of business, and love. When made into a lip balm, it allows the words you speak to bring you good luck; you can use the product during spell work but also on a day to day basis.

Mint is good for breaking hexes, jinxes and to undo the tricks of an enemy; perfect combination with Alkanet when you are trying to bring good fortune into your life.

Other herb associations that are good lip products are Cardamom; this will allow your words to be sweet. Which is good for court cases, when speaking to a lover or boss and the situation requires your words to be delicate and not forceful. Cinnamon is another example; this is good for making friends, and connections, it also allows your words to be sweet, but it has a protective, and even defensive property to it. Cinnamon can add a fire element to your words, and it is known to naturally ward off bad intentions and “evil” Spirits.

The next tip was one that I thought sounded crazy (even mocked it on the page) until I tried it.

SALT ON YOUR CARPETS AND IN YOUR LAUNDRY: I shared an article and I thought all the tips were good but, I thought, salt on the carpet? So, two weeks ago, I added a half pound of Pink Himalayan Salt to my regular carpet deodorizer, mixed it all up, enchanted the finished product and went to town sprinkling it all over my carpets!

The change in energy was not only tangible, it was immediate. I let the mix sit on my carpets for about 20 minutes or so, and then I vacuumed it all up. The trick is to make sure you empty your vacuum immediately afterwards and get the garbage bag that contains the dirt OUTSIDE to the trash.

I thought well, if this works with carpets, what else could it work with? Then it popped up on my newsfeed: mix salt with your laundry! Now, you only want to add a small amount (about a teaspoon) to your laundry, and make sure to use fine, granulated Himalayan Salt and not the chunky stuff.

What I do is add the granulated salt to baking soda, enchant it, and keep it next to my washer machine. It not only gets any odors out of the clothes, sheets, and towels (or whatever else I am washing), it gets out the bad and/or stagnant energy, too.

This leads me to one of my favorite blogs on being a Modern Witch. This is how to cleanse your clothes with sage, but also how to CHARGE your clothing with protection power!

My final tip for today is one that I think everyone needs to adopt as a practice of theirs.

TAPESTRIES: I don’t know if this is strictly my Taurus Moon speaking but I love the ambiance of tapestries hanging on my walls; it also beats painting. Haha. Seriously though, tapestries can add not only color to your space but they add energy, too! I had for a very long time an OM tapestry hanging up, and it added the OM vibration to my space.

I now have a round, white and blue Mandala on my Southern Wall; this adds a fantastic, light, energy because one of the colors associated with the Southern direction is white. I also have a Shiva tapestry in front of my East facing window, and an Astrological wheel, and Elephant Tree of Life on my West facing wall. My North wall has a collection of personal items, and shelves of all my crystals as this direction represents Earth. Here is a resource for direction correspondences.

These simple but effective tips will add energy, serenity, power, and Sacred intentions to any Modern Witch’s life. The times may have changed but we have not, we simply adapt.

Blessed Are The Witches.

Lessons in Magick: Protection

Shelby Robinson

“The best lightning rod for your protection is your own spine.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

When I started a FB group I was given the opportunity to interact one on one with many practitioners of all paths, and all skill levels; this is not something that I am afforded in my everyday life, as most of my readership and group members have been quick to agree on. I have trust issues when it comes to friendships, but I also find it hard to connect with practitioners anywhere locally.

I am grateful to have an online community, one that has not only taught me much about myself but also has become a place where much knowledge is shared and exchanged.

It took some time to work the kinks out but since I started finding my personal flow, the page has become a tight knit community where I go to seek refuge when the outside world becomes too much.

It’s like a whole new world has opened up for me since starting NR, and I feel I am more equipped to give my readership what they want because I am interacting with so many people, and forming friendships/connections in the process.

A discussion in the group I used to run initially sparked the idea for this blog; the debate was about protection, and methods of protecting one self.

It seems that people don’t know how to protect themselves, and I have to sit back and scratch my head trying to figure out why.

This isn’t new, though, it has been coming up for a very long time, a common trend I have observed.

I am not formally trained, and I have not had longtime mentors guiding me; I find and have found inspiration among everyone I cross paths with.

Since starting to walk my Spiritual path I have drifted further away from people, descending deeper into the rabbit hole while learning to become sturdy on my feet; I am still training, practicing, learning, and seeking.

The first thing I learned, and I believe all people should learn first is Protection Magick.

There is a difference between Defensive Magick and Protective Magick.

A Witch should be proficient in both areas in order to be her/his best Self, but one needs to Master protective Magick if any other form is going to work properly.

I don’t like the term Master because I think that if we claim that title then we limit ourselves by telling our mind we have reached our peak; if we reach our peak there is nothing left to chase, but in reality there is always something to chase. So I will never be a Master, but protection Magick? That I have mastered.

I am useless to myself, my kin, and my mission here if I cannot protect the physical, and psychic body.

Protection Magick is personal, and it’s something that we each have to practice in order to find a rhythm that works well with our own. I am going to give some tips, and practices that have worked for me personally, nothing is written in stone, and you can tweak it if necessary.

I am going to focus on protecting your space, this can be done on a small scale with your altar or bedroom, or on a larger scale say your apartment building, or house.

The most effective tool in Magick is ourselves, but physical tools play an important role, too. To protect a home, or space some tools are Black Salt, Pink Himalayan Salt, Course Sea Salt, Brick Dust, Crystals, Feathers, Brooms, Bones, Sacred Geometry, and Sigils.

Black Salt, Pink Himalayan Salt, and/or Course Sea Salt should be placed in thresholds (doorways), and windowsills primarily. You can also place some in a bowl beneath your bed, and change it every other day, this works well for children because the salt grounds the energy, and the negative thoughts (nightmares). I think Himalayan Crystal lamps are great for absorbing negative energy in the air, too.

Brick dust can be sprinkled anywhere, it can be used around your house, or a specific room within the home, and it can even be used to consecrate sacred places in the woods, or cemeteries, if you are into outdoor ritual.

I make my own banishing salt which is one of the most effective tools I have. It’s a mixture of Course Sea Salt and dried Sage leaves.

A good tool for protecting your property is urine; think of a dog marking their territory, obviously I am not suggesting urinating in your home, this is for the yard, or exterior perimeter.

Blood sigils, and blood in general, can be another really effective tool for protecting your space. I personally love sigils, but I also love things personal to me so I find sticks, and tie them together with hemp, binding them with blood  and I hang them from the ceiling by small hooks, and that is my way of marking territory, or saying this space belongs to this bad ass Witch, and enter at your own risk.

I suggest crystals all the time, and I feel like I have even suggested many of the methods mentioned above before but here I am again writing about this.

The best crystals for protection of property are Black Tourmaline, or Jet placed near the doorway; other good crystals to use, that should be placed in the corner of each room are, Selenite, Amethyst, Citrine and Labradorite. If you throw in Moss Agate, and Rose Quartz it will bring abundance, and love into your home.

Feathers are a tool I have primarily seen people use for traces of death in particular casting but feathers are a great protection object. Whatever species the bird, that is what the properties of the feather will hold: Hawk feathers are for guardianship, connection to the spirit world, and the gift of sight. Crow or Raven feathers are protective, especially through Norse and Celtic traditions, but also are messengers, and will reveal a friend or foe to you. Owl feathers will add protection via Darker energy; they add wisdom and the ability to “see in the dark” (see yourself through the storm, or rough patch).

Brooms, or Besoms, are amazing tools for protection of home/space. They were used primarily to “Sweep away spirits” and for “flying”. Flying was achieved by applying psychotropic herbs, or plants that were made into a balm to the base of the broom and inserting vaginally, once absorbed through the thin mucus membranes of the vagina the Witch will begin to hallucinate, or “fly”. Nowadays this is not common practice, but the Besom is still symbolic for Witches, and it not only sweeps, or cleans away negative energy, it marks our territory.

Bones are used in a similar way as feathers, but the vibrations are much heavier because bones represent death, whereas the feather could be from a still living bird.

For example, frog bones are used for transformation, and spiritual cleansing, but they are also good for hexing (depending on the frog). If you use bones from a snake it represents life/death/rebirth, and if from a venomous snake can be used to “bite” whomever wishes your home, or its inhabitants harm.

Sacred Geometry and Sigils fall under the same category, and this is pretty self-explanatory; you simply take whatever symbol you’re drawn to (Pentagram, Helm of Awe, Merkaba, Platonic Solids, Leviathan’s Cross, Archangel Sigils, Runes, or even a personal symbol that you created) set your intentions and you draw it either on paper, or the walls of your home in ritual oil (they will dry clear).

I think tools, and objects are helpful and have worked for me many times, but I primarily like to use fire and water energy to protect my home, and myself.

My logic behind this is that fire is a purifier, and water is an equalizer.

I use Draconian Fire, but I know some people who use the fire of Pele, or Hestia.

You can create your own fire source, this takes much more out of the practitioner, and my personal preference is the ferocity of Draconian fire.

To tap into this source, you need a black candle, an incense, a needle, a bowl of water and you must draw Lucifer’s Sigil in your blood, you can use Leviathan’s Cross, but I have found Lucifer’s Sigil to be the most potent. Cast your circle, or do whatever it is you do to prepare for ritual or divination, place the black candle above the bowl of water, prick your finger and draw out Lucifer’s Sigil, then put it on the right side of your water, light your incense, and your candle, drop some blood into the water and begin to focus on the candle light, and say:

“Oh, Black Dragon I call to thee, may the powers beyond hear my plea, Great Leviathan! Tiamat! The Great, and mighty sea Beast! Serpent of the Void, who winds through eternity! I take your mighty flame into me.” Then begin to chant, “Veniat ad me Draco, Veniat ad me Draco, Veniat ad me Draco…”

You will begin to feel the heat coursing through you, once you have enough control of it, you must enter a meditative state, and while looking at the same black candle begin to picture in your mind’s eye what (or who) it is that you wish to protect then say, “Ignis Draconis, Redimio”. (Fire of the Dragon, encircle me)

The water protection grid is much easier, probably because I am a triple Cancer, but this requires only a meditation, a bowl of water (a blue, or clear glass bowl) and a blue candle (dark blue, preferred). You do your usual circle, and imagine the area you wish to protect, or person(s) and you say, “Aqua et creatio, redimio.” (Waters of creation, encircle me)

I usually use an interlocking grid of fire and water, with a few surprises in there just in case. I have a Witch ball, and Witch Bells for anything more on the physical that has gotten through. I keep herbs on hand, and war water, too (it can be great for casting out energy, not just for hexing).

Protecting your physical, or “vessel” is just as important as protecting your property; physical protection is one of the most personal, and subjective forms of Magick, there is no right or wrong way to do it, and what works for me, may not work for you.

Some of the suggestions given here can be tweaked to protect your person. To add an extra barrier between me and the outside world I personally like to use enchanted jewelry, and some of my tattoos were done using ink I had personally enchanted beforehand.

A Witch should be able to protect her/his self at all costs, at the drop of a dime, and no one should be walking around paranoid of an attack. If you are constantly worried about attacks it usually means your subconscious is telling you that your shields are weak, or that you are vulnerable.

True Magickal attacks are rare, and in most cases they are petty in nature, but in the off chance that you or someone you love falls victim, you need to be able to do what is necessary to eliminate the threat, and that is where defensive Magick comes into play, but that is an entirely different ball game.

Protect thyself, as you Love thyself–until death, and beyond.

Blessed are the Witches.
