Lessons in Magick: Witch, Remember Yourself!

This came from a deep place inside me. They are words I wish someone had spoken to me when I needed it. I bring them to you, to light your way and lessen your pain.

We have all done it. Stepped out of the current, the flow with the Other. We have tried to forget what makes us “US” and thought if we hide our particular truth, we’ll be safe; if we conform, we will become a part of a different whole that didn’t seek us out and that probably doesn’t really want us.

Then, we are lost and only when we hit the bottom of that well do we feel the desire to jump into the flow and pull ourselves back to remember who we were and who we are to become. Who the multiverse needs us to become.

I’ve done it myself. More than once and found a way to get back to myself. Slogging through the world’s density, to break into the Light. But it doesn’t make others comfortable and it isn’t always safe and sweet, but it is necessary. And in the end, restarts work. You haven’t really lost ground, only some time.

You’ve come a long way and you are not a beginner. The flick of the lighter is like the click of a key in a door to a room you have known and decorated for years. It’s your space and it is available to you at a moment’s notice. And all you need is a moment.

For years, you have made this path. Your breath has cleared the air, each step marks the way. The fire in your heart shines the light to guide your way. The incense fills the air, drawing to you the allies to guide you and dispelling all those that would trip you up. You write the map as you dream. Your words inspire the long-sleeping spirits, who also dream as we incarnated do, to awake.

But sometimes the world of our bodies makes us distracted and forget who we are. Lesser minds and souls get in your way because they want you small and wounded. Just getting by makes us even smaller.

But you are not small. You are as wide as the universe, bright as a star. And your light, your fire sparks the same in your own kind. And that fire is needed to drag the rest of the world out of its darkness. And that is needed more than ever.

If you need to, start small – a candle, one stick of incense, a few lines of chanting, or just once, speaking a true statement instead of dancing around the subject.

If only in the shower to yourself, at first. Be true to yourself. Speak it out loud. They will hear you. The ripple of the truth, of one person being honest with themselves, will eventually build to a tsunami that will wipe out the darkness of lies.

WITCH OF THE WEEK: Aidan Wachter

This week’s Witch of the Week is an amazing talent and someone I’ve grown to call a friend.

He is as down to Earth as they come, with a deep, primal knowledge of the Craft.

Aidan Wachter is a sorcerer with either 35 or 40 years of experience, depending on how you measure it! His background is wide-ranging, with influences from Wicca, Austin Osman Spare, chaos magic, traditional witchcraft, Huna, and many more.

He is a talismanic jeweler, a musician, and author of the book Six Ways: Approaches and Entries for Practical Magic.

Now onto the questions that I have been aching to ask this brilliant Sorcerer.

Q. Your first book, Six Ways: Approaches & Entries to Practical Magick, has debuted at number one on Amazon, and has remained in the top three slots since it was published. Congratulations! What is it about this book, in your opinion, that you believe resonates so deeply with people? What do you think this book has that others on the market do not?  As someone who has read it, twice, I can say that for me it’s not only your practical applications, but it’s how you write about the Craft; it’s clear that it’s truly one of your passions. And, nothing makes me want to immerse myself into something more than feeling how much another loves and respects it; in this case, your book.

A. “Well now it’s been up & down quite a bit, but it stayed in the three’s for far longer than I ever expected, which was fun! I think that mainly it is really, really honest. As you know, I work with a pretty vocal set of allies, and I place the book firmly in their court. And they were very insistent that it be about what I do & why (as well as why I have come to believe it works, which is a separate why!) and called bullshit on anything that didn’t meet that criteria. So I think what a lot of people are seeing is an approach to practice/life/magic/path that is perhaps less idealized and removed than the usual. Since I am not actually trying to get anyone to practice as I do (which is likely impossible, anyway) I think it has opened the door for some people to be more comfortable with their own inclinations and ways that don’t really fit the established molds. This is at least the main points I see reflected in the emails I have received about it! If it has something that other books do not, I’d say it is that it is very, very practical while being completely non-dogmatic and still has a coherent, cohesive worldview. So it really does show both the how and the why in a way I’ve found lacking in a lot of books of magic. Also, perhaps, is that if it has an agenda (and I can assure you it does!) that is to suggest going deeper rather than wide. We really only need a few methods of working that really solidly work for each of us, and we are golden, in my opinion.”

Q. You are most well-known for your Talismans, how long have you been a Silversmith, and what made you get into it? I own one of your pieces and it’s been life-changing (see link above) and has become a part of me; I literally only take it off to shower and I wouldn’t even do that if it wasn’t enchanted and blessed with oils on a weekly basis. For me, I treat my pendant very much like a living Magickal tool, is that how you intended them to be? Why is it important for your pieces to be created in a ritualistic setting, like you do in your shop?

A. “I learned silversmithing from Mark Defrates, who was a fantastic jeweler, brilliant magical mind, and a wonderful friend who passed about two years ago. I just loved it from the get-go, and have only made a very few non-magical pieces in my life. To me, making them the ‘hard’ (read also ‘really slow, super fun way’!) way lets me really infuse them with the energies that this kind of tool calls for. I absolutely think of them as living things, and I often refer to them as creatures! They need feeding, attention, and mostly they wish to be used, to really be what they were intended to be, and in my experience, desire to be. The shop itself is highly awake, aware and active.  I do probably 90% of all of my magic in the 7×9 foot space where I build the pieces, so it’s an all-in deal. The magical nature of the space, of the ongoing offering & asking practices, and the work to bring in what each piece needs all combine in the work I do. No part is separate.”

Q. As a lifelong Practitioner, what is some advice you wish you were given when you first started out? What is some advice you would give to someone just starting out?

A. “Oh, damn. For me starting out: Ignore those who demand complexity. Do what makes sense to you, how it makes sense to you. Understand that sorcery & magic are at the root of what makes us human. They are completely natural, if not currently normal. The magical worldview is not weird or odd except in comparison to the complete and utter clusterfuck that is the modern Western wasteland (it really doesn’t deserve the word ‘culture). So if it’s seen as weird, then that’s a blessing, a Great Good Thing, and should be always remembered and cherished as such. For the newcomer? All of the above same, plus: find one or two solid ways to do the things you need to do and hone your skill with them to a razor’s edge. This will take time, and how long it takes is in inverse proportion to how many directions or tools you choose to add to the kit. So pick one, or a few, tools and methods and go deep. Deep is where the power lies, in what you can actually do, not what you know on an intellectual level or how big your library is. Remember to use a material base for work you wish to have manifest in the physical!”

Q. I enjoy how your Craft is bare bones. And, what I mean by that is, your Craft is just that: yours. It’s very much what you have created it to be, and what works best for you; I have witnessed you create powerful grids of earth and bone to cast; negating all the frills and hoopla a lot of Witches and Occultists in this Instagram age put out there. Do you think at its core Magick is really simple in a sorta paradoxically complicated way? That all we truly need are our intentions, and what’s on hand?

A. “For me, magic (and I’m largely interested in hands-on practical magic) is pretty simple (which gets the standard caveat ‘which does not mean easy’), in that it is basic, primal, foundational. And like most practices, getting really good at almost anything is getting really savagely good at the basics! I’ve always had a lot of spirit-contacts, and for me, that is the root. So if I tend to that (the relationships with the Others, spirits, and allies), almost everything else is a given. Is what I am doing is appropriate & suitable to my allies? If so, then all is well. If it’s not, bringing a lot of irrelevant logic, theory and artifice won’t make it so. I personally, being a spirit-worker, don’t think our intentions are always enough, though they can be in some cases. And they absolutely have to be in order to do good, consistent work.”

Q. As society divides more and more, and people seem to be pulling away from organized religion we are seeing a rise in numbers of Earth-based, and Pagan belief systems, why do you think that is? Is it simply people being tired of indoctrination and wanting to get back to their roots, or is it more complex than that?

A. “I do think it is about getting back to the roots. We are seeing now how the modern world is breaking down our physical bodies with the rise of auto-immune diseases and their ilk, and I see the same types of breakdowns in the social structures we inhabit. All of what we think of as organized religion is an event of the VERY recent past if we take the long view of human history, which I do. Those religious structures are also breaking down or asking for increasingly unreasonable demands of people. Materialism is not a very fulfilling alternative to those kinds of religious structures for a lot of people. I believe people are looking backward, and asking ‘what was life/spirit/culture/magic like before it/we all got fed into the wood-chipper of industrial and post-industrial materialism? Is there something in there that can help to make this place more bearable, that can maybe serve as a thread to guide us to something better than what we have been sold as possible?’. In this way, I see magic, paganism, herbalism, permaculture, animism, et al as a continuum of ways & means to create a more meaningful life and hopefully, stave off (and possibly heal) some of the destruction that is happening on all levels, from disease to species extinction to fascism. To me, it’s about looking fully beyond the control games of those who seem quite happy to burn this whole place down to line their pockets and choosing instead a radically different path, one that suggests that it is possible to live lives of connection and meaning beyond the ability to earn a buck or climb the social ladder.”

Aidan has fed and fueled my Muse more times than I can count; whether through his view of the Craft, ritual tips, his genuine kindness or simply sharing photos of his farm and the amazing animals and creatures (of all varieties) that share his space, he motivates me to be a better Practitioner, but also a better human.

For these reasons, and so many more he has been chosen as The Nephilim Rising’s Witch of the Week.

Congratulations, Aidan.

Tips for the Modern Witch, Part Two

“You are one thing only. You are a Divine Being. An all-powerful Creator. You are a Deity in jeans and a t-shirt, and within you dwells the infinite wisdom of the ages and the sacred creative force of All that is, will be and ever was.”

Anthon St. Maarten

I am a person who likes to observe, and through my observations I have found that people want to know how to incorporate Magick into their everyday life; how can they make Ancient techniques practical in this modern world?

The texts out there are great as far as information goes but how do you APPLY all of that? How do you bring real Magick into your life?

It’s rather simple, really.

If I were not an insanely (literally, insane) creative person, I don’t think I would have come up with some of the tips/ideas that I have; not all of them are original ideas, they have been tweaked but the inspiration will be sourced and linked.

Magick is complicated but I think we overcomplicate it when it comes to practice, and application.

The first tip is kind of silly, I admit it but it works.

NAIL POLISH: I know, I know, you are thinking what in the fuck does this have to do with Magick? Well, this tip is two-fold. First, color therapy is real; not only are specific colors associated with our Chakras and Auras, colors themselves are associated with our brains. Psychologically speaking there is a connection between thoughts, stimulation and decision making and the colors around us. There is also a connection to color and energy; color is energy. Here  is a link that goes further into color and the brain.

Choose a color associated with a Chakra, or goal. Example: Purple and gold would be great colors for abundance, success, strength, connecting with Angels and prophecy. Purple is associated with the Third Eye and gold is associated with your Sacral and Solar Plexus Chakras.

The second part of this is, you can wear a color associated with a specific Magickal working. Say you have done a truth Spell; paint your nails blue beforehand (blue associated with the Throat Chakra and speaking truth). When you are writing your spell, and mixing your herbs/dressing your candle, you are infusing everything you touch with the truth energy. All because you painted your nails blue.

I know it sounds absolutely ridiculous but it really works. You are then connected to the Spell while the polish is on. Another, perhaps better example: say you want to bring love, lust and passion back into your relationship, or in your life; follow all of the steps listed but with a fiery red nail polish color instead of blue.

The general rule is, whatever colors correspond with Candle Magick (see below) would be the same for nail polish Magick. It works! Seriously.

White: Spiritual Blessings, Purity, Healing, Peace, Attracting Love

Pink: Attraction, Romance, Clean Living, Reconciliation

Red: Love, Affection, Sexual Passion (Sacral Chakra), Body Vigor (Chi, Life Force, Pranic energy, etc) Luck and Energy

Orange: Changing Plans, Opening the Way, New Roads, Prophetic Dreams

Yellow: Devotion, Prayer, Rewards, Happiness

Green: Money, Gambling Luck, Business Success, Good Harvest, Steady Employment

Blue: Peace, Harmony, Marital Fidelity, Joy, Healing, Truth

Purple: Mastery, Power, Ambition, Success, Control

Brown: Court Cases, Mediations, Neutrality, The Natural World and Animals

The idea of nail polish Magick leads me to my next tip, and while I am a huge advocate for using herbs in as many hygiene and household products as we can, this is focusing on lip products.

HERBAL INFUSED LIP PRODUCTS: I recently bought a lightly tinted, super glossy and smooth Alkanet/Mint Lip Balm.

Alkanet is primarily used for dye, hence it being used for the tint, but it has properties like all herbs! In Hoodoo traditions, Alkanet is used in games of chance, to bring good fortune in matters of business, and love. When made into a lip balm, it allows the words you speak to bring you good luck; you can use the product during spell work but also on a day to day basis.

Mint is good for breaking hexes, jinxes and to undo the tricks of an enemy; perfect combination with Alkanet when you are trying to bring good fortune into your life.

Other herb associations that are good lip products are Cardamom; this will allow your words to be sweet. Which is good for court cases, when speaking to a lover or boss and the situation requires your words to be delicate and not forceful. Cinnamon is another example; this is good for making friends, and connections, it also allows your words to be sweet, but it has a protective, and even defensive property to it. Cinnamon can add a fire element to your words, and it is known to naturally ward off bad intentions and “evil” Spirits.

The next tip was one that I thought sounded crazy (even mocked it on the page) until I tried it.

SALT ON YOUR CARPETS AND IN YOUR LAUNDRY: I shared an article and I thought all the tips were good but, I thought, salt on the carpet? So, two weeks ago, I added a half pound of Pink Himalayan Salt to my regular carpet deodorizer, mixed it all up, enchanted the finished product and went to town sprinkling it all over my carpets!

The change in energy was not only tangible, it was immediate. I let the mix sit on my carpets for about 20 minutes or so, and then I vacuumed it all up. The trick is to make sure you empty your vacuum immediately afterwards and get the garbage bag that contains the dirt OUTSIDE to the trash.

I thought well, if this works with carpets, what else could it work with? Then it popped up on my newsfeed: mix salt with your laundry! Now, you only want to add a small amount (about a teaspoon) to your laundry, and make sure to use fine, granulated Himalayan Salt and not the chunky stuff.

What I do is add the granulated salt to baking soda, enchant it, and keep it next to my washer machine. It not only gets any odors out of the clothes, sheets, and towels (or whatever else I am washing), it gets out the bad and/or stagnant energy, too.

This leads me to one of my favorite blogs on being a Modern Witch. This is how to cleanse your clothes with sage, but also how to CHARGE your clothing with protection power!

My final tip for today is one that I think everyone needs to adopt as a practice of theirs.

TAPESTRIES: I don’t know if this is strictly my Taurus Moon speaking but I love the ambiance of tapestries hanging on my walls; it also beats painting. Haha. Seriously though, tapestries can add not only color to your space but they add energy, too! I had for a very long time an OM tapestry hanging up, and it added the OM vibration to my space.

I now have a round, white and blue Mandala on my Southern Wall; this adds a fantastic, light, energy because one of the colors associated with the Southern direction is white. I also have a Shiva tapestry in front of my East facing window, and an Astrological wheel, and Elephant Tree of Life on my West facing wall. My North wall has a collection of personal items, and shelves of all my crystals as this direction represents Earth. Here is a resource for direction correspondences.

These simple but effective tips will add energy, serenity, power, and Sacred intentions to any Modern Witch’s life. The times may have changed but we have not, we simply adapt.

Blessed Are The Witches.
