LESSONS IN MAGICK: People Don’t Owe You Sh*t

“Man is not, by nature, deserving of all that he wants. When we think that we are automatically entitled to something, that is when we start walking all over others to get it.”

Criss Jami

We live in a “give me” society, so is it shouldn’t be surprising that this mentality has seeped over into the Magickal community.

Yet, here I am shocked and dismayed at what I have been witnessing lately.

Don’t get me wrong, freeloaders are not new to the Craft, but it does seem like their numbers have increased.

Add in the fact that a lot of newbies don’t want to put in the work; they want the title of Witch, they want the (often stereotypical) aesthetic of a Witch, but they don’t understand the verb Witchcraft (thanks Nikki for putting that so eloquently).

It’s true.

Witchcraft IS a practice.

Sure, it looks different for everyone, but this path requires work.

Your path requires you to put in the work.

You can read, and read and read, collecting all the information you can find (ie. Armchair Occultist);

You can ride on the coattails of someone else, and their experiences;

You can bounce from practitioner to practitioner presenting them with some sob story and asking them to do your bidding for you;

But, eventually, the Laws of Magick will force your hand, and you either shit or get off the pot.

You either put into practice the art of Magick, or you back the fuck away slowly and don’t try to make Sacred traditions trendy ever again.

I am obviously wound up writing this post and it’s because I am seeing a lot of entitlement lately.

On top of that, I have been witnessing paranoid people claiming every unpleasant event in life is Magickally related. I have also seen people asking for energy/thoughts/good vibes/assistance on a regular basis.

I want to address these topics.

Throughout my writing career I have expressed my opinions on these subjects individually, but there is a need for this to be said in one place.

This is one of my pieces where it could be received in a few ways, and I am sure I will ruffle some feathers; I wouldn’t be who I am if I didn’t.

Remember, if anything I say offends you, ask yourself, “Why am I offended?”

Your feelings have everything to do with you, and nothing to do with me.

I am but a reflection.

First thing first, Witchcraft is a lifestyle.

For some people it’s a look, too, but at the core it’s a practice that we live, and breathe.

Philosophy varies from person to person, our Craft will as well, but the one thing that Witches have in common across the board is that they put in work to create the outcomes they want.

We play with the web of Wyrd.

We manipulate energy and bend it to our Will.

We are powerful, formidable creatures.

Knowing how much power we wield, it drives me nuts to see Witches who refuse to put in work. Not only do they refuse to put in work (for whatever reason) when work is required, they run to another Witch, and expect them to do their bidding.

We now are dealing with entitled, lazy Witches.

I absolutely love to help others, and I love to share my knowledge, but I will not, in fact, I refuse to do anyone else’s work for them.

I will help when needed, I will offer tricks and tips, but your path is yours to walk and the work is yours to do.

Stop looking for handouts.

Nobody owes you anything; not the world, not your job, not your fellow Witches.

Stop expecting Magickal work to be free.

You pay for services on your car, your home, your body, but when it comes to services for your Soul, you turn your nose up at it.

Or, you try and pull the “well, Witches of old never charged.”

We are not Witches of old, we are Modern Mystics and we have bills to pay.

Stop expecting results with no effort; that’s like expecting a reaction (outcome) with no action (intention).

You’re smarter than that.

Stop expecting Magick itself to be free.

Nothing is free.

Stop playing the victim.

You are only a victim if that’s how you write your narrative.

Own your shit. Face your shit. Transmute your shit. Level up.

It’s what the rest of us are doing.

You can’t take and take and take from people with zero regard for their well-being, and their own struggles.

We all have our battles to fight.

Don’t get so high on your horse that you believe yours are more important.

Secondly, life sucks. I am a professional pessimist, but even if I wasn’t, life would still suck. This is a fact that we must accept.

There are countless variables in play all around us at any given moment, to think we can or do have control over it all is insane.

Sometimes shit happens.

There is no profound lesson.

There is no Magickal attack.

There is no villain.

There is no “Karma”.

Life sucks.

Life is also crazy beautiful and amazing and should be enjoyed but if you think that every bump you hit in life is somehow Magickally related, you are going to be a paranoid, frantic, no energy having wreck.

Everything we do is Magick, but not everything done to us is.

So, take a deep breath, go with the flow.

Accept what is, don’t dwell on what isn’t.

Believe in yourself.

And, trust the process.

Third, I have been noticing people in groups I am, even people on my friend list who are constantly asking for energy of some sort. Whether it is good vibes, Magickal assistance, thoughts or whatever, their life is always in turmoil and they always need help.

I have an unpopular opinion that every single one of us is an energy Vampyr in one way or another, and if you look closely at the people around you, you will see what I mean.

I mean, *everything* is an energy exchange.

Like I mentioned above, I have no problem helping someone out—if I have seen they have put the work in.

I prefer people who need my help to approach me with nothing but brutal honesty, and transparency.

However, if it becomes a trend, or a common occurrence, it raises concern.

Why do you constantly need help and/or energy?

Why is your life constantly in turmoil?

Getting energy is as easy as walking outside and standing in the sun. I mean, it isn’t considered the Pranic center in Ayurverdic tradition for no reason; it’s a battery.

Use it.

We all need help occasionally and I am not knocking that AT ALL, but it shouldn’t be a regular thing. I shouldn’t be signing onto fb and seeing the same 10 people asking for energy because of *insert overly dramatic huge life event*.

Meanwhile, myself and everyone else I know have their own shit going on.

We are all trying to navigate the waters of life, and more times than not I am drowning right alongside some of the people I help.

So, I help where I can and feel the need to, I draw boundaries when it seems suspicious.

I separate genuine from the fake.

The people who have given up completely, or the ones who feel too entitled to get their hands dirty are the ones I can’t and don’t assist.

Refusing to get your hands dirty is worse than giving up because it means you won’t even try.

I am the first to admit that my life is chaotic, and messy, but so are the lives of everyone I know. For this reason I try to show compassion and empathy at all times.

We all have overflowing plates;

Life is about learning to balance it all.

Lessons in Magick: Feeding Our Spirit’s

“All that spirits desire, spirits attain.”

Kahlil Gibran

Feeding our Spirit’s is one of the most important practices Witches must keep up with; I refer to both the Spirits we work with, and the Spirit that exists within us—the Spirit that is us.

This is the part of the blog where I have to remind people that I am a Luciferian and there is no worship aspect to my Craft but, I am also a Traditional Witch, and thus, I work with Spirits (Ancestral and those who seek me out).

It takes discipline to maintain a relationship with Spirits, and take care of them.

A bit presumptuous to think we can just call on them (whomever they are) on a whim without having an established working relationship and/or at least having something to offer them, don’t you think?

After all, is that not what Magick is; varying levels of discipline?

Let us first talk about actual Spirits that we work with, if you are not a theist then skip right over this part and scroll down.

There seems to be a common misconception that we must have ornate altars and setups to please our Spirits or make our Magick more potent and powerful; this simply isn’t the case.

As I always say, Magick is about intentions not materials. Sure tools, Sacred space and such add ambiance and energy but they do not make or break our Magick, or us.

Personally, I have a main working altar; it honors the deities I work with most often or feel most connected to. I also have an altar that honors my Ancestors and the Dead in general; I make sure to keep it separate and not share any of my offering plates, or other items used for them in other areas of my home. The dead do not like to share, not to mention the residual energy can be a bit tricky.

I have an altar to charge my Shop items, an altar dedicated to the Divine Feminine, and a few other small altars (or what I call “landing zones”) throughout my home. I like any visitors to be drawn to certain areas; it helps keep track of those who are here out of curiosity and those who are here out of malice.

There are Witch Balls, plenty of warding set up, and iron horse shoes above every door; along with many other tricks of the trade but, I can’t spill all my secrets, now can I?

The idea of keeping several altars is to make my space as inviting to Spirits as I can; it also happens to be super inviting to humans and animals as well. I do not have a large home or a lot of space (I live in a decent size apartment) but Magick is my life and so, I incorporate it into my home décor as much as possible.

The type of offering given depends on the Spirit you are working with. You can start out with the general rule that incense/candles/resins, a beverage of sorts and some type of food are necessary; Spirits are much more willing to work with you if they are fed and happy. Some will ask for cigars, objects, or plants, etc.

A few examples off the top of my head:

If you have Fae around then you want to make sure there is plenty of milk and honey, or sweets in general for them; they also like anything shiny, and make sure to keep iron free from there designated space because it harms them.

If you work with Djinn, they also enjoy shiny objects; in fact the more gaudy, and bold the object (usually jewelry) the more pleased they will be. They also like Myrrh Resin.

If you are working with Daemons it will be specific depending on who you are summoning.

If you are working with the Divine Feminine think of foods that are sensual in taste, texture, and look; pomegranate is always associated with the Shadow Goddesses, while an apple or grapes represents the Lighter Goddess Archetypes. Think chocolate (dark chocolate for the dark Goddess), strawberries, a decadent cake, juicy peaches, and/or any food that is considered an aphrodisiac. You will want to choose a rich red wine for the beverage offering to the Shadow Goddesses, and a sweet, white dessert wine for the other Goddess energies.

If you are working with Angels, God Consciousness or other Divine Light Frequencies, you want to keep their space pure, fresh and clean. Offer citrus fruit and rich, sweet breads. For the beverage you will want to use purified water. Depending on who/what you are working with, you can tweak this a bit. For example, Raphael likes all things green; Gabriel likes all things golden and/or yellow; Uriel likes all things blue; Michael likes all things silver and/or white. They may request stones, foods, or other objects associated with those colors.

You want to offer items that vibrate at a similar frequency to the being in which you are working with. It is important to keep our Spirits fed, happy, and feeling welcomed because I have seen firsthand (and experienced on my own) the wrath of a pissed off, hungry Spirit.

If you work closely with Spirits, even if you don’t use them in your workings on a regular basis, you want pay attention to them; they hold many answers.

Tarot cards no longer speaking to you? Check your Spirits.

Inspiration running at an all-time low? Check your Spirits.

Little things keep happening and you have the feeling that “something is out to get you”? Check your Spirits.

Chaos and discord running rampant in your home and/or life suddenly, and out of nowhere? Check your Spirits.

I fully acknowledge that not everyone works with, or even believes in Spirits; I also acknowledge that not every little thing that goes wrong in our lives is Magickally, or Spiritually related.

However, I have seen the correlation between the mundane and the Magick too often to dismiss it so easily; I think all avenues of thought should be considered, or looked in to. Checking with our Spirits is the first step in figuring out a problem or obstacle.

Now, moving onto the importance of feeding our Spirit.

We live in a world of unknowns, a world currently full of fear mongering, hatred, divide and intolerance; a world I no longer know anymore. That is why now more than ever it is of the utmost importance that we feed our Spirit and live authentically.

I am not an optimistic person, and I don’t even consider myself happy. To clarify, I am happy with my life as I know how blessed I am; I am referring to the actual mood known as “happy”– it’s just not a mood I know very well.

Because I get so overwhelmed and so easily I have to take time out of the hustle and bustle of everyday life and feed my happy; which is my way of saying, do something that brings me joy.

Of course this changes from week to week, even day to day but it is so important to do. If we are not happy and fed (literally and metaphorically) we are tired, drained, lack inspiration and motivation to achieve the things we need to get done; on the mundane and Magickal levels.

Sometimes this means taking a bath and pampering myself; sometimes this means doing a hard workout getting the sweat glands working and heart pumping; sometimes this means going out in nature and just listening to Mother breathe.

Finding joy in the simple things often offers the best answers to life’s most profound questions.

Our Spirit’s are the heartbeat of life, listen closely.

Thud, thud. Thud, thud. Thud, thud…

Lessons in Magick: Witchcraft Saved My Life

Daniel Waschnig

“The first time I called myself a ‘Witch’ was the most magical moment of my life.”

Margot Adler

This blog has been brewing inside the cauldron of my mind for a while now; finally I am ready to put it all together and tell my story.

I found the inspiration for this piece during a session of insomnia and aimlessly flipping through early morning TV– full of infomercials and Christian’s proclaiming how this or that church/program and God saved their life.

I am anti-religion but I know that it’s a necessary evil in our world for some type of structured belief system to be put in place for society to work properly; sad but true.

The problem with this is that religion is used as a form of control, division and far too often the dumbing down of humanity.

Within the more conservative, orthodox, fundamental, and/or extremist sects (which seem to be all religion has become) people lose logical, critical thought processes and individual thinking; this is when the herd mentality is seen, and displayed negatively; not for nature’s intent of it being survival instinct.

I believe it’s a true sign of character to question authority; it shows courage, but society tells us it’s wrong, that we always have someone to answer to, there is always an authority figure.

Call me crazy but, I not only had the notion and concept of being equal to everyone well established as a kid, it was also one of the main lessons taught to me by my late Grandfather.

You can believe you are equal to everyone and not come off pretentious, elitist, superior or condescending; all you have to do is show some compassion and respect.

People have lost respect for themselves, for each other and for this planet; respect for yourself and others, along with seeing the bigger purpose of fighting for this planet will allow you to transcend and ascend.

A point missed by so many.

There is so much healing and deprogramming that must occur for the human mind and soul to understand and accept there is something outside of themselves. However, when you get down to the bare bones of Magick you will come to the realization that YOU are all you will ever need; you never truly have to look outside yourself because everything and everyone is a reflection of you; the universe is inside of you as you are a inside it.

Religion has many dark sides, the main being that people fail to rely on themselves and take personal responsibility.

Nothing saddens me more than when people give credit for their hard work to God.

Such as, “I beat Cancer, God is good”—I am sure it had nothing to do with the 10+ years of schooling your Oncologist and team of Doctors went through.

My favorite recently was an acquaintance who had gastric bypass surgery to lose weight and practice a healthier lifestyle. I tip my hat to her.

If you are unfamiliar with the process, it’s not easy to get approved for this surgery and you need to show weight loss on your own, through diet and exercise before they will rubber band your stomach; I say it like that because no one wants to talk about the roots of the problem which are our appalling food industry, lack of fresh fruits and vegetables (at affordable costs) for those on and below the poverty line, and emotional binge eating–they only want to talk about the end product, “fat people” and how to shame them.

Needless to say 3 months after her surgery she looks and (assuming) feels fantastic but her posts on fb made me want to bash my head into a wall: “God is good, look at this weight loss.” Or “Won’t He do it, down another 20 pounds!”

Yes, because that is exactly what happened, God was so busy ignoring all the other woes, and ills of this world that he helped you with your weight loss, and had absolutely nothing to do with modern science, your strong will, and the drastic personal changes in your lifestyle.

Nope. It was all God.

The point I am trying to make is that I see testimonials of how Christianity or God saved someone, or helped someone along; I see praise being given time and time again to a Divine being, but never, or rarely do I see someone give some credit to themselves without being torn down by other’s who don’t understand that it is okay to pat yourself on the back, and give credit where credit is due.

There are stories galore about how Christianity saved people from other belief systems, addiction, bad situations, etc.

In fact, I recently read an article about a lovely Woman (much sarcasm) who gave a disgusting representation of the Craft, and said that her experience with Witches is what made her become a Christian. So much ran through my mind in that moment, what could have possibly happened within the craft to make this Woman run to a religion that has done nothing but persecute us, and everyone else that is not of their faith?

Fun Fact: A majority of “Witches” executed during Puritan Witch Trials were Christian, the actual Witches had fled to “New Salem” aka New Orleans when the Witch hunts began, or they found seclusion, solitude, and safety in the deep woods.

To put it simply, Christians were killing Christians.

Shocker.

I am going to say it loud and proud, Witchcraft saved my life.

The Craft helped me heal and understand my physical and mental illnesses, it saved me from many dangerous situations, it has allowed me to heal and hex, it has granted me a level of self-awareness I cannot put into words but most importantly, it saved me from myself.

Without Magick, I would be dead, and this is not something that’s questioned, or exaggerated, it is fact.

The thing with Magick is that it doesn’t come naturally or easily; when I say it doesn’t come naturally I mean that we have to put in work–I believe in natural Witches.

We are tested, brought to our limits and beyond; thrown into the Abyss where we learn to swim, or get swallowed up.

Magick itself is a test, it’s a challenge; those who choose to step on this path are tested by deities and Spirits we work with.

Often times though, the hardest test comes from the depths of our own psyche.

We lose concepts of comfort and security which are falsely placed anyways; we lose everything we thought we knew, everything we thought we loved, and all we can do is put the faith in ourselves, and our Craft that we will survive–that in our metaphorical death there will be purpose and rebirth.

I lost everything, quite literally, everything.

Once I truly devoted myself to Magick it was like a switch was flicked, a light had been turned on and suddenly the illusion that I had been living in, the lies I had been telling myself were seen for what they were: self-destructive behavior and suppressing my Magick.

I knew my Magick was there, I had experienced things since I was a kid, dabbling since I was 5, but I never fully embraced my Witch, I ran from her, she scared me; it took me years to face her and embrace her as part of my whole.

The process was the most painful thing I have ever experienced in my life, but not a day goes by where I am not grateful for that pain; through suffering comes understanding.

I grow every day, I change every day, and I learn every day.

I am constantly evolving, constantly moving forward, seeking knowledge, and challenging myself.

It hasn’t been easy, and it isn’t easy now, but I have never experienced such life altering, mind blowing, soul shattering experiences before, and they continue to manifest in the most glorious ways.

Once your inner Witch awakens there is no denying her/him; you can suppress it for so long before the Universe will force your hand.

Once you have seen Magick, I mean, really seen Magick, there is no going back.

And, why would you want to?

Blessed Are The Witches.
