Welcome back to Summer 2020: The Summer of our Discontent.

So what to do we have on the agenda for part 3?

*Checks list* Mercury retrograde, Summer Solstice, Neptune retrograde, and oof… two more eclipses.

*Slowly rubs temples*

I swear the more we get into the Summer the more accurate this tag line gets.

Okay then!

Let’s just jump right in shall we?

First, let’s talk about retrogrades!

The planets Mercury through Pluto go retrograde at regular intervals. Retrogrades just mean that the planet in question looks from our earthbound point of view, to be moving backward.

It’s not really moving backward.

It has to do with angles and ellipses and all those things. But symbolically what that means is that the energy symbolized by that particular planet, does not function well in an outwardly or in an extroverted way.

It wants us to focus on our internal worlds.

The outer planets, Jupiter through Pluto, move more slowly and they are retrograde for basically half the year at different times for each planet.

When the outer planets retrograde, they aren’t as noticeable for us. It happens more often and they stay that way for longer periods so you often won’t feel it unless it touches a sensitive point in your natal chart, or unless another faster moving planet makes an aspect to it. Or most often you will feel it when it goes retrograde and then when it goes direct again. Outer planets also usually have more of a generational or societal effect; the planet will move back and forth over certain points and then when they finally move away, you notice how much things have changed in whatever aspect of life you experienced the retrograde.

They affect us personally as well in this regard; in whatever house or realm of life experience the planet happens to be in at the time.

The personal planets Mercury through Mars don’t stay in retrograde mode as long. Venus retrograde, which is happening right now, lasts for about 6 weeks and happens once every 18 months or so. Mars retrograde happens once about every 2 years and lasts for about 70 days.

Mars will be going retrograde in September, so stay tuned for that.

Mercury retrograde lasts for about 3 weeks, and happens 3 times a year, the most frequent.

You honestly must have been living under a rock, or I don’t know, maybe it’s your first day on the internet, to not have heard the term Mercury retrograde. Or as one of the more popular memes puts it, Mercury is in Gatorade again. Mercury rules the signs Gemini and Virgo, and it also rules the 3rd and 6th houses.

In the natal chart it is one of the personal planets, so a planet that symbolizes an aspect of our personality. It symbolizes our conscious mind, our perception, our intellect, how we think and communicate, our memory, how we learn and what we like to learn about. It is non-emotional, highly rational and objective. In the outer world, it symbolizes communication of all kinds, spoken, recorded, written and, also rules publishing. It rules learning, the assessment of data, telecommunications, computers, software, electronics, all forms of shipping and transportation including vehicles and roads, pretty much anything mechanical. It rules advertising, sales, public relations. It rules medical issues, and our health and how we take care of our health.

It even rules sibling relationships and pets. Mercury really has a lot to rule over, basically our day to day lives and activities.

So, since Mercury has such a big list of responsibilities and moves so quickly and tends to get us lost in the routine of daily life; Mercury and we need to take frequent breaks. This is the Universe’s way of telling us to slow down. Slow down, focus on the internal world and reflect.

How does it do that you ask?

In the most annoying way possible!!!

It causes delays and miscommunications and broken things and lost things and people popping back into your life that you may or may not want to deal with…

*Big inhale*

But it forces you to stop and go back and re-evaluate.

Re-evaluation in itself is good.

Even taking breaks is good.

But our modern life does not accommodate the Universe’s forced breaks very well.

We still must navigate our worlds because well, Life.

I saw a meme today with a quote from the movie The Dead Poet’s Society, it said “Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.”

That is what the Universe is trying to get us to focus on for a moment, the things we stay alive for. What is that for you?

The best way to get through Mercury retrograde, which will last from June 18th to July 12th, and I honestly cannot stress these tips enough, but if you can put it off until later, DO. If you can’t put it off, then you need to double check, no triple check, no quadruple check everything you do before you commit to anything!

Including sending that text. *wink*

Also, when you do get some time, take a walk down memory lane. Read a book you love, watch movies or shows you love, listen to music you used to listen to; it’s not only comforting when you feel out of control, but it helps you to re-evaluate, which honestly is the purpose of the this time. It will be retrograde in Cancer, so in the larger sense, we should reflect on what brings us comfort and nourishment, what makes us feel nurtured, our family and what family means, our cultures of origin, our soul tribes and probably just our souls in general to be honest. We really do have a lot of reflecting to do as a society right now.

Also happening this month, June 20th is the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year and the official beginning of Summer! Such as it is.

Kind of anti-climactic really, with all the goings on. But honestly, we have some more important things to focus on at the moment so the Summer fun will have to wait.

And speaking of Cancer… Cancer season begins June 21st.

Also, on June 20th or 21st depending on where you are located in the world, we have the 2nd of the 3 eclipses this season at 0 degrees Cancer.

It is a New Moon Solar eclipse.

Then on July 5th we will have a Full Moon Lunar eclipse at 13 degrees Capricorn, the last eclipse of this eclipse season and also the last eclipse of the Cancer/Capricorn family of the eclipses for the time being.

The Cancer/Capricorn polarity symbolizes fluidity v. rigidity, family v. career, family v. the state, inner life v. public life, and nurture v. discipline. This current New Moon Solar eclipse is at 0 degrees Cancer. New Moon Solar eclipses are like super New Moons, they have a lot of energy behind them. New Moons are times for beginnings, this is a time for setting our intentions for the coming month. However, since this a New Moon Solar eclipse we have the ability to set even longer term and more ambitious goals. And since this is also occurring in Cancer our focus should be on those Cancerian themes. Again if you have planets or sensitive points at 0-5 degrees Cancer or Capricorn you will feel this eclipse personally, otherwise we will feel it as more of a societal influence.

What will be feeling exactly?

Lots of this Cancer/Capricorn polarity.

There’s a whole lot going on in these two signs right now.

We have the Sun, Moon and retrograde Mercury in Cancer and we have retrograde Jupiter and Pluto hooking back up again at about 25 degrees Capricorn.

Jupiter expands whatever it touches and its touching retrograde Pluto.

If you recall from Part 1 of this series I talked all about retrograde Pluto, you may want to go back and check out Part 1 again for a refresher on Pluto.

Jupiter is expanding that Plutonian energy right now.

This can be a rough time, it’s bringing up ghosts and skeletons from our personal unconscious and our Collective Unconscious and Jupiter is expanding them and making feel bigger.

The positive thing about this is we are also getting some supporting energy from Mars in Pisces. We must fight these ghosts and skeletons with compassion and empathy, for ourselves and for others.

By dealing with and reconciling these things we can make new beginnings with the New Moon Solar eclipse.

New beginnings and systems that support and nurture all of us, every single human being. But we can’t do that without first fighting those inner ghosts and skeletons in our closets both personally and collectively.

This is our focus right now, and if we can do that, maybe at the final eclipse in Capricorn on July 5th we can rid ourselves of some structures that have outlived their usefulness.

I will talk more about the Capricorn eclipse in the next installment.

For now, we set our intentions.

This is a period of personal and collective growth.

When we know better, we should do better.

Let’s be better humans.
